Thor: Ragnarok was the big winner at the box office over the weekend raking in a cool $122 million domestically. Baseball celebrated its winner last week, while college and professional football delivered plenty of surprises.

TINK Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) The Houston Astros celebrated their World Series title in style

2) The Philadelphia Eagles are the talk of the NFL with the league’s best record

3) College football’s two best teams, Alabama and Georgia, are pulling away from the pack and on a collision course for a December showdown

Major League Baseball (MLB)

At long last…After waiting since 1961 to win their first title, the Houston Astros finally captured a World Series title last week. The team that entered the league as the Colt 45s over a half-century ago celebrated with their fans Friday.

Excused absence…Know missed the celebration? Star pitcher Justin Verlander skipped the parade and instead flew to Italy to marry model Kate Upton.

Need a break from baseball? Teams have off until February when Spring Training begins.

National Football League (NFL)

Turnaround is fair play. Halfway through the NFL season, the action is nothing if not topsy-turvy. Look no further than the NFC standings where all four division leaders have done a 180 from last year.

Team

2016 Record

2017 Record

Philadelphia Eagles

7-9, 4th place

7-1

Minnesota Vikings

8-8, 3rd place

6-2

New Orleans Saints

7-9, 3rd place

6-2

Los Angeles Rams

4-12, 3rd place

The Eagles continue to impress, and at 7-1 have the best record in the NFL. Thumbs up to Philly’s quarterback Carson Wentz who leads the league MVP race.

Eagles fans are cautiously optimistic and inspired by their Houston Astros brethren. The Eagles last championship came in 1960, predating the first Super Bowl and one year before the Houston Astros (who just won their first World Series) entered MLB.

In the week’s final game Monday night, the Detroit Lions exorcised some demons by beating the Green Bay Packers in Wisconsin. Big deal? Yes. The Lions had lost 24 of the last 25 games at Lambeau Field

College Football

The unpredictable college football season continues…

Beautiful Bedlam. In an annual game dubbed “Bedlam,” Oklahoma beat arch-rival Oklahoma State 62-52 Saturday. The matchup was the highest scoring game of the 112 contests these two schools have played.

Oklahoma starting QB Baker Mayfield had a ridiculous 598 passing yards and five touchdowns propelling Oklahoma back into the playoff picture and placing him at the top of the Heisman Trophy race for college football’s top player.

No rest for the weary as Oklahoma hosts #8 TCU with the Big 12 Conference title and a berth in the Final Four at stake.

Unlike Oklahoma, several title contenders had their bubbles burst with losses Saturday, sending coeds and alums straight to their favorite watering hole: #6 Ohio State, #7 Penn State, #11 Oklahoma State, and #13 Virginia Tech.

The other marquee matchup this coming weekend is #3 Notre Dame vs. #8 Miami – a game once referred to as “Catholics vs. Convicts” in a heated 1988 contest.

The new AP Top-5 teams are:

1) Alabama

2) Georgia

3) Notre Dame

4) Clemson

5) Oklahoma

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Despite losing top free agent Gordon Hayward for the season to a gruesome leg injury on opening night, the Boston Celtics have the best record in the Eastern Conference.

In the West, the Houston Rockets are riding the hometown Astros’ winning wave and sit atop the standings alongside the Golden State Warriors. Winners of two of the last three NBA titles, the Warriors stumbled out of the gate but are quickly regaining their form.

What are five words a pro athlete shouldn’t use in his or her tweet? How about “I don’t wanna be here.” Unfortunately nobody told disgruntled Phoenix Suns star guard Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe has been unhappy in Phoenix and let the Twitterverse know it last month. He was consequently told to stay home and Monday was slapped with a $10,000 fine.
