Hail to the Chiefs

No impeachment talk here…The game, halftime show, commercials and parties were so good that an estimated 17.5 million people took off work Monday, the day after the Super Bowl.

Let’s take another look at the big weekend and what else is happening in the world of sports…

TINK Sports Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) Super Bowl 54 brought plenty of excitement and a new champion, the Kansas City Chiefs, after a 50-year drought

2) The NBA is still mourning Kobe Bryant but the games go on

3) Novak Djokovic won his 8th Australian Open title Sunday

National Football League (NFL)

Super Bowl LIV is in the books and the Kansas City Chiefs are champs…again…only after a half century hiatus, the second-longest time between championships in football history.  The Chiefs struggled early but scored 21 unanswered points to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.

Chief of all Chiefs…KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes stunk for three quarters but turned it around in the final period, and was named Super Bowl MVP.  At just 24 years of age Mahomes became the youngest player in NFL history to win league MVP (2018) and a Super Bowl.  Get used to seeing Mahomes as he is becoming the face of the league and will soon be the highest played player in the NFL.

Shakira and J-Lo brought the heat during a moving halftime show.  What to see it again?

And what about the commercials?  Not bad with Ground Hogs Day, Loretta, Smaht Pahk and a Doritos Dance Off.  Here is a recap.

If you had so much fun that you need a calendar placeholder for next year’s Big Game, here are the details:

Date: Sunday, Feb 7, 2021

Location: Tampa, Florida

National Basketball Association (NBA)

The NBA and sports community are still reeling from Kobe Bryant’s tragic death last week.  The Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe’s old team, postponed their first home game since the tragedy before finally returning to play at the Staples Center Friday.  Wearing Kobe’s #24 (Kobe wore #8 and #24 during his NBA career), LeBron James gave a moving, off-the-cuff tribute.  #LakersNation #MambaOut

On the court, Portland’s Damian Lillard is on an historic run over the last two weeks.  The 6’2” guard is the first player in NBA history to average 45 points and 10 assists over a six-game stretch.

Lillard, aka Dame D.O.L.L.A, an Oakland native, is not only and NBA star but also an accomplished hip hop artist.  Check out this video from his latest album.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Is the cold weather and scandal surrounding MLB getting your baseball loving friends down?  They will be comforted in knowing that pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training (in either Florida or Arizona) next week.

Tennis

Old and New…The Australian Open ended Sunday with a familiar sight and a new one.  In the Men’s bracket, #2 seeded Novak Djokovic won his 8th Australian Open and 17th Major title.  Djokovic came back from down two sets to one to secure his record-extending Aussie Open title.

In honor of Kobe Bryant, Djokovic was wearing “8”, “24” and “KB” on his warmup jersey. #MambaMentality

Chieftain…The 32-year-old Serb, in good health and likely with several productive years ahead of him, is making a case as the men’s tennis GOAT (greatest of all time).

On the women’s side, many of the top seeds lost early in the tournament but that doesn’t take anything away from 21-year-old champ Sofia Kenin.  The Russian-born American citizen beat two-time Major champion, Venezuelan Garbine Muguruza,to take home her first Grand Slam title.

Croissants and chocolate await as the next Major championship, the French Open, begins May 18th.
