Halloween was the name of the game at the box office this weekend with Jigssaw topping the charts bringing the “Saw” franchise back to the big screen.

The sports world had its share of tricks, treats and off-the-chart action this week, too. While many dress up like athletes, pro players themselves get into the fun on Halloween like Denver Broncos standout defender Von Miller.

Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) In baseball, the Houston Astros lead the World Series 3-2 with a chance to win their first title Tuesday versus the LA Dodgers

2) The Philadelphia Eagles keep winning and have the best record in the NFL

3) The NBA’s top two teams, the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, are both off to slow starts

Major League Baseball (MLB)

#HoustonStrong The Houston Astros won two of the three games played in H-Town over the weekend, and now lead the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in the World Series. The action returns to LA Tuesday, and the Astros are looking to win their first championship since entering the league in 1961.

Tired colleagues at work? Maybe the late night World Series action is keeping them up. Sunday night’s game was a perfect example. The back and forth battle lasted 5 hours and 17 minutes (the second-longest World Series game ever), setting records for offensive production, and ending in the 10th inning with a 13-12 Houston victory.

National Football League (NFL)

The National Anthem controversy isn’t gong away. The latest episode was played out when Houston owner Bob McNair channeled his Orange is the New Black by saying “inmates shouldn’t run the prison.” Players were upset and called for a players-owners meeting.

Before Sunday’s game most Houston Texans knelt in protest of their owner’s statement.

After all the distractions there was still a game to play. And it was fantastic.

With four scores, Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson continued his historic touchdown pace: 19 TDs in his first seven NFL games – the most of all time. His heroics were not enough, however, as the Texans lost to the Seattle Seahawks and star QB Russell Wilson (aka Ciara’s husband) who matched Watson’s gaudy four TD, 400 yard performance.

Flying high…The Philadelphia Eagles are soring. Philly beat the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, and halfway through the season have the NFL’s best record at 7-1. Eagles QB Carson Wentz, in just his second year, has become a leading MVP candidate.

The Dallas Cowboys received bad news Monday night when star running back Ezekiel Elliott, after exhausting several appeals, had his six-game suspension for domestic violence effectively upheld by a Federal judge.

College Football

The game of the week saw previously undefeated #2 Penn State fall on the road to #6 Ohio State in a thriller, 39-38. The loss propels Ohio State back into the national championship picture and puts a huge damper on Penn State’s title hopes.

Fired or let go? A meaningful distinction. #3 Georgia blew out Florida 42-7 and then things got interesting. Florida and head coach Jim McElwain “parted ways” Sunday. A mid-season firing is rare enough but this story has a twist.

McElwain stated that his family and players received death threats – a claim that the university investigated but could not corroborate. At stake is a $12.76 million payout in case of termination but much less if it is deemed that false claims brought negative light to the university.

Perfect no longer. Another undefeated team to drop was #4 TCU who lost to #25 Iowa State Saturday. Only #1 Alabama, #2 Georgia, #4 Wisconsin and #9 Miami remain unblemished in major college football.

The new AP Top-5 teams are:

1) Alabama

2) Georgia

3) Ohio State

4) Wisconsin

5) Notre Dame

National Hockey League (NHL)

With the warm Fall weather, don’t forget that the NHL is in full swing. The St. Louis Blues are the class of the Western Conference while the Tampa Bay Lighting sit atop the Eastern Conference.

In the Florida sun, Tampa boasts the league leaders in points (both far from home): Steven Stamkos, a 27-year-old Canadian, and Nikita Kucherov, a 24-year-old Russian.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Boooo…Two weeks into the NBA season we have several surprises.

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, winners of the last three NBA titles, are both middle of the pack teams.

An unexpected treat…Another shocker is that the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies, two teams with low pre-season expectations, sit atop their respective conferences.

Like those who wait a full year to don their Halloween best, patience has paid off for the Philadelphia 76ers. Their mega-talented 6’10” point guard and #1 overall draft pick in 2016, Ben Simmons, missed last season with injury. The 21-year-old Australian native is healthy and putting up big numbers, leading in the Rookie of the Year race.
