A Quiet Place reclaimed the top spot at the box office this weekend edging out Rampage, which had been #1 last week.

Similar battles were taking place in the sports world as both the NBA and NHL are in the throes of their playoffs.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening in sports…

TINK Sports Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) The NBA playoffs are in full swing, and the two best teams – the defending champion Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets – appear to be on a collision course to meet

2) The NHL playoffs are advancing to the second round and there is no stopping the Las Vegas Knights, a team in its first year of existence

3) The NFL Draft, pro football’s version of a beauty pageant, begins Thursday

National Basketball Association (NBA)

The New Orleans Pelicans became the first NBA team to advance to the second round of the playoffs Saturday after sweeping the Portland Trailblazers behind MVP candidate Anthony Davis, aka “The Brow”, and his 47 points.

Other than the Pelicans dominance, exciting games between evenly matched teams is a theme of this year’s playoffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers are riding LeBron James, still the best player in the NBA, to a 2-2 series tie with the Indiana Pacers.

The Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, however, may be providing the most drama on and off the court. After the Celtics lost their best player Kyrie Irving for the playoffs due to injury, many wrote of the Celtics. Boston brushed off the doubters and won the first two games at home. Milwaukee returned the favor and took its two home games over the weekend behind their all-world player (literally, he’s Greek), Giannis Antetokounmpo aka the “Greek Freak.”

No respect…Giannis was feeling a little like Rodney Dangerfield when he went out to eat after Sunday’s big win at a local Mexican restaurant. BelAir Cantina had him wait 10 minutes before he had had enough and walked out. The restaurant issued a public apology.

The two best teams in the regular season, the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, both lead 3-1 in their series and look destined to meet in the Western Conference finals. The Warriors, despite losing Sunday and playing without their two-time MVP Steph Curry, appear too good and too young for the aging San Antonio Spurs.

National Hockey League (NHL)

Like the NBA, the NHL playoffs are entering their second round.

Need a favor? Ask fans of these teams who advanced to the next round. They should be in an excellent mood.

Eastern Conference

  • Tampa Bay Lightning take on the Boston Bruins / Toronto Maple Leafs winner
  • Washington Capitals face the Pittsburgh Penguins (the defending champions)

Western Conference

  • Nashville Predators square off with the Winnipeg Jets
  • Las Vegas Golden Knights (in their first year in existence) meet the San Jose Sharks

 National Football League (NFL)

Where’s Waldo? If your football fan friends disappear Thursday night they are probably holed up somewhere watching the NFL Draft. The annual ritual where NFL teams select the best college players gives fans hope that their squad will be a Super Bowl contender next year.

Is a preseason college draft such a big deal? Yes. The NFL is touting this as the “largest free football festival in league history” and is expecting to draw well over 250,000 fans in Dallas and millions on TV.

The Cleveland Browns, by virtue of being the worst team in the league last season, have the first pick and are “on the clock.” The Draft runs Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday.

Car Racing

When you gotta go…Ever have that feeling that nature is calling and you have to get out of the car?   That happened Sunday to Indy car driver James Hincliffe at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. The only problem was that the drivers were riding under a caution flag, which means that he couldn’t just pull over.

Oh no he didn’t…Yes, he did. Hincliffe admitted after the race that during the slow lap he joined the wet suit club. #TakingOneForTheTeam #NatureCalls

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Mano a mano – MLB fans were treated to an epic battle between a pitcher and a hitter Sunday.   San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt set an MLB record by seeing 21 pitches from Los Angels Angels rookie pitcher Jaime Barria. The historic at-bat took over 12 minutes which is about the time it takes to walk half-way across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Despite losing two in a row, the Boston Red Sox still own the league’s best record at 17-4. Red Sox fans shouldn’t get too excited, however, as the team has 141 games remaining over the next five months.

Also keeping their fans happy are the division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets and Houston Astros who have the second, third and fourth best records in baseball.
