Playoff Picture

With all that’s going on in world, we hope to provide a distraction with a fun look at sports. We hope you enjoy…

College and professional football dominate the water cooler talk but don’t forget that baseball playoffs are here. The Boys of Summer are ready to reclaim their share of the sports spotlight for a few weeks.

Big-3

Here are three things you need to know this week:

1) The MLB playoffs start Tuesday and run throughout October.

2) The NFL has one undefeated team, and it isn’t New England or Atlanta. It’s the Kansas City Chiefs.

3) The New York Giants are 0-4 and the Big Blue faithful are hitting the panic button.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

After kicking off the season in April, baseball has finally reached its post-season. Several teams bring interesting storylines with them.

American League

  • Cleveland Indians – have not won a World Series since 1948 (though they reached a thrilling World Series game 7 last year before losing to the Chicago Cubs).
  • Houston Astros – have NEVER won a title in their 55 seasons in the league. (FYI – their original name was the Houston Colt .45s). Some winning would bring #HarveyRelief to a recovering H-Town.

  • Minnesota Twins – Turnaround is fair play. The Twins were baseball’s worst team last season.

National League

  • Los Angeles Dodgers – Jekyll and Hyde. For most of the Summer the Dodgers were winning at an historical pace. Then they cooled off and proceeded to lose 16 of 17 games. Despite the ups and downs they had the best record in baseball.
  • Washington Nationals – Oh Canada. The Nats have also never won a title since they came into existence as the Montreal Expos in 1969.
  • Chicago Cubs – Lovable losers no longer. The Cubs hadn’t won a World Series from 1908 until last season. Back to back titles in Chicago would be sweet.

Tuesday and Wednesday bring with one-game, winner advances matchups:

Tuesday – Minnesota Twins @ New York Yankees

Wednesday – Colorado Rockies @ Arizona Diamondbacks.

National Football League (NFL)

One-quarter of the way through the NFL season and there are plenty of surprises:

The Good…

1) The Los Angeles Rams (who relocated from St. Louis during the offseason) are 3-1 and leading their division. Most predicted the Rams to be among the worst teams in the league going into the season.

2) The Kansas City Chiefs are a huge surprise – they are the only undefeated team at 4-0 following their Monday night victory.

The Bad…

1) The New York Giants, projected by many to win their division, are 0-4. Folks in NYC are more upset at the Giants’ record than with Trump’s traffic jams.

The Young…

Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans rookie QB, looks like the stud prospect who won the National Championship at Clemson.

The Chicago Bears will turn the team over to their prized rookie QB Mitchell Trubisky Monday night against the division rival Minnesota Vikings.

The Favorites…

The Buffalo Bills traveled to the ATL and shocked the Atlanta Falcons pinning the first loss on the Super Bowl Runner ups.

The defending champion New England Patriots didn’t fare any better losing Sunday, falling to 2-2 and out of first place in their division.

One week reprieve! If your friends follow the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints or Washington Redskins and you need a break from football, you’re in luck. Those teams have a bye and don’t play this coming weekend.

College Football

The state of Alabama was rocking Saturday night as #1 Alabama embarrassed Ole Miss (The Blind Side movie school) 66-3. Troy (not the fictional city but an 18,000 student public university in Troy, AL) shocked #25 LSU (and the rest of the college football world), 24-21.

#2 Clemson is the only team challenging Alabama’s top dog status in college football. The Tigers were impressive Saturday beating #12 Virginia Tech.
