In the weekend’s heavyweight battle, POTUS went head to head with pro football and basketball players.

On the field, there were plenty of upsets and some close calls in football, and sweet celebrations in baseball.

National Football League (NFL)

NFL Week 3 kicked off amid President Trump’s comments that NFL players refusing to stand for the National Anthem are SOBs that should be #fired.

The NFL took exception. And how. Players and league officials fired back, and even owners who supported Trump, such as New England Patriots’ Bob Kraft, showed their displeasure and disagreement.

On the field, solidarity was the theme. Players stood, sat, and some didn’t exit the locker room for the Anthem but the NFL presented a united front.

I’ll bet on that…Sunday’s games were full of surprises and joy, in Las Vegas at least. 10 of the 13 underdogs covered the spread, with six teams winning outright.

On any given Sunday…The week’s biggest upset was the winless Chicago Bears dropping the powerhouse Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime. That was closely followed by the New York Jets, who some thought could go 0-16, beating the Miami Dolphins. Hall-of-Fame bound QB, Drew Brees, led his New Orleans Saints to a stunning victory over the favored Carolina Panthers.

Barely avoiding what would have been the largest upset of the season, Tom Brady threw five touchdowns to lead his Patriots to a three-point victory over the Houston Texans, a team they were favored to beat by 14 points.

At many of the post-game press conferences media questions centered on player reactions to the President’s comments, overshadowing a very competitive week of play.

The week ended with the Dallas Cowboys taking a desert road trip and beating the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football.

College Football

Fashion statements were made on campus this week with some throwback uniforms.

Looking to go undefeated, #6 Oklahoma State was snake-bitten at home losing to #16 TCU.

Narrowly escaping huge upsets were #3 Oklahoma, #4 Penn State and #20 Florida. Relief was evident on frat row in Norman, State College and Tallahassee.

You’re Out! Florida State began the season as the #3 ranked team but thanks to an 0-2 start and losing their quarterback to injury, FSU dropped out of the top-25 for the first time since 2011.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

In more President vs. Sports drama…It is customary for major US sports champions to take a trip to the White House. That’s about to change.

After the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors held a team meeting to decide whether to accept a White House invitation, President Trump rescinded the offer. #Hesitation #InvitationWithdrawn

How much is your freedom worth? A frustrated Dwyane Wade, a three time NBA champion, reached a buyout with the Chicago Bulls. Wade was schedule to make $24 million this season but took $16 million instead to be a free agent. If you are D-Wade’s financial planner, don’t worry, he’ll sign with another squad and make up for some of the lost salary.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

In addition to the calendar saying so, the other sure sign that Summer is over is the end of the baseball regular season. The campaign, which started in April, comes to a close Sunday. Playoff action begins Tuesday, October 3.

Welcome to the party. The New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks dusted off their dancing shoes after clinching playoff berths last week. The Yankees feature star rookie Aaron Judge who hit his 50th home run Monday eclipsing the rookie record set by Mark McGuire.

The Chicago Cubs will join the fun, with the Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins most likely to round out the playoff teams.
