No Summer Slowdown

By June 19, 2018Golf, MLB, NBA, Soccer, World Cup

Big weekend? It was for Disney and Pixar. Their Incredibles 2 posted a massive $180 million debut, the best for any animated film and a top ten all-time opening weekend. Beyoncé and Jay-Z also went big dropping their surprise album, “Everything Is Love,” as “The Carters” on Saturday. Mr. Carter kept up the momentum being named CEO of Puma basketball Monday.

Brooks Koepka also made a splash this weekend, winning the US Open golf tournament. The World Cup is adding juice to the sports scene over the next month, typically a slow period for fans.

Let’s see what’s going on in the sports world…

TINK Sports Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) Brooks Koepka survived a difficult course to win the US Open for the second year in a row

2) The World Cup began last week and billions are watching

3) Baseball recaptures the spotlight as the NBA and NHL are off for the summer

Golf

While many were enjoying lobster rolls and beach time in the Hamptons this weekend, Brooks Koepka was busy fending off the competition and winning the 118th US Open at Shinnecock Hills. Koepka became the first back-to-back US Open winner in 29 years.

For his efforts Koepka took home a cool $2.16 million. Not a bad four-day payout.

Soccer

Ocean’s 8…The 2018 World Cup in Russia is underway with the initial Group Stage (where teams play within their four-team pod). For the eight teams with the best chance to win results after one match have been anything but predicable.

Won: England, Belgium, France

Tied: Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina

Lost: Germany (depending champs)

Squads have two games to get on track and advance to the Knockout Stage.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Keep hope alive. NBA fans will be glued to the TV Thursday night as the league holds its annual Draft where teams look into their crystal ball and hope to select the best young talent.

The first three teams to choose (aka the worst teams in the league) are the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks.

Tall, young and talented…These 18 and 19-year-olds are the top best young players in this year’s Draft and likely to be selected high:

  • Deandre Ayton – a 7’0” center from Arizona
  • Luka Doncic – a 6’8” guard from Real Madrid (Spain)
  • Jaren Jackson Jr. – a 6’11” forward from Michigan State
  • Marvin Bagley III – a 6’11” big man from Duke

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Take me out to the ball game (definitely in these cities)…The four best teams in baseball all come from the American League: The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros (winners of 12 in a row) and Seattle Mariners.

The Yankees and Mariners square off in the Bronx for a three game series starting Tuesday.
