Dominance was the name of the game in basketball, tennis and horse racing during their championship runs last week.

If you thought huge sporting events were on summer hiatus, think again. The biggest tournament of them all (with 3.2 billion viewers four years ago), the 2018 World Cup, starts Thursday in Russia. The same day, the US Open golf tournament tees off at Shinnecock Hills, New York.

Here are three things you need to know:1) Last week basketball and hockey crowned their champs: The NBA’s kings are the Golden State Warriors, and the NHL’s top dogs are the Washington Capitals
2) Rafael Nadal won an incredible 11th French Open
3) The 2018 World Cup starts Thursday in Russia and lasts a month

National Basketball Association (NBA)

As the famous baseball legend (and part-time philosopher) Yogi Berra said “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” The Golden State Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0 to win the NBA championship. The Warriors took home the title for the third time in four years, playing the Cavs in the Finals all four seasons. The Warriors’ Kevin Durant was the MVP for the second year a row.

These Warriors now have to be considered one of the best teams in NBA history.

National Hockey League (NHL)

Trump and Kim Jong Un or the Capitals – who is the talk of the town in D.C.? Close call.

Worth the wait…That’s what Washington Capitals fans were saying after their squad won its first Stanley Cup last week. How long was the wait? The Caps entered the league in 1974, the same year Gerald Ford took over at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

After 13 NHL seasons, superstar Alex Ovechkin finally won a championship, and was crowned playoff MVP.

Soccer

The World Cup – the tournament of all tournaments – starts Thursday in Russia. How popular is it? The 2014 Finals, played in Brazil, were watched by one billion people, and the games as a whole were viewed by 3.2 billon fans.

Top four teams:

1) Germany

2) Brazil

3) Portugal

4) Argentina

Horse Racing

Justify completed the Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. The three-year-old horse dominated the field in all three races. Justify is only the 13th horse to win the Triple Crown in over 140 years.

Tennis
Dominant or Dominante – in any language Rafael Nadal is the master of the French Open. Rafa took home his 11th French title dominating the field, loosing only one set the whole tournament.

Simona Halep, the #1 seed on the Women’s side finally got over the hump after falling short twice in the French Finals. Halep took home the title by defeating American Sloane Stephens.

Golf

Heading out to the Hamptons this week? So are tens of thousands of golfers, fans and media members. The US Open starts Thursday at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. In US Open tradition they have been working hard to make the course as difficult as possible.
