Giving Thanks

Turkey, stuffing and giving thanks wouldn’t be the same without some great sports action mixed in. Despite the November chill, the playoff races in college and pro football are just heating up.

National Football League (NFL)

Old school throwback: In 1989 A Tribe Called Quest brought us “Can I kick it?” Apparently not a favorite of NFL Kickers. They set an NFL record by missing 12 extra points this week.

Tom Brady had a throwback of his own, playing his hometown San Francisco team for the first time in his 17-year career. Brady led his New England Patriots to an easy win over the San Francisco 49ers putting up four touchdowns in the process. Brady is a leading MVP candidate despite a four-game suspension for “Deflategate,” which he mocked in his new commercial.

The Dallas Cowboys have won nine-in-a-row and sport the NFL’s best record at 9-1. Their latest victim was the Baltimore Ravens. “America’s Team” is so hot that rookie QB Dak Prescott’s missed garbage toss is lighting up social media.

The New York Giants and Washington Redskins both won Sunday and are trying to keep pace with the Cowboys runaway train. It gets interesting this week as Dallas plays Washington on Thanksgiving Day.

Hola Futbol Americano! The NFL took its game on the road Monday night and played in Mexico City’s famed Estadio Azteca. Between tacos and Tecates, the Oakland Raiders held off the Houston Texans 27-20. Think football is strictly an American sport? Think again. The NFL has gone global and is now heavily courting Hispanic fans.

To help get you ready for family, food and football here is the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day schedule:

  • Minnesota Vikings Detroit Lions (Thursday 12:30pm ET)
  • Washington Redskins Dallas Cowboys (Thursday 4:30pm ET)
  • Pittsburgh Steelers Indianapolis Colts (Thursday 8:30pm ET)

College Football

No surprises here…#5 Louisville was the only top-10 college football team to lose last week as they were handled by Houston on Thursday.

Thanksgiving weekend traditionally brings several rivalry games. Some so big that they have nicknames:

  • “The Apple Cup” #6 Washington #23 Washington State (Friday 3:30pm ET)
  • “The Game” #3 Michigan #2 Ohio State (Saturday 12:00pm ET). Let’s hope it stays civil, unlike last year’s hair pulling fight.
  • “The Iron Bowl” #16 Auburn #1 Alabama (Saturday 3:30pm ET)

Major League Baseball (MLB)

#ThanksForHavingMyBack Kate Upton rallied for her man, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander. When the hurler came in second in the Cy Young Award voting for best pitcher Upton took to Twitter with this jab: “I thought I was the only person allowed to #$% Verlander.” If you don’t think she’s up on the sport, check out the moment where the supermodel showed off her baseball knowledge and met her future husband.

NASCAR

Lucky 7…After a year of speeding around the racetrack at over 160 mph and lots of left turns, the NASCAR season came down to a final race in Miami. Hailed as possibly the best driver of all time, Jimmie Johnson won the race and with it a record-tying seventh Sprint Cup Series Championship. Maybe JJ should thank sports legends Peyton Manning, Serena Williams, and Derek Jeter for the inspiration.

Soccer

Family gathering and holiday cheer come just in time for Jurgen Klinsmann. The former German World Cup champion and US Men’s National Soccer team coach was fired Monday after five years. Klinsmann had a nice run leading the US team to the knockout stage in the 2014 World Cup but the squad has struggled lately.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

In the true spirit of giving back…The Golden State Warriors sit near the top of the NBA standings, and their leader and reigning two-time MVP Stephen Curry found time on his off day in Indianapolis to visit a young fan suffering from leukemia. #GoSteph

Happy Thanksgiving!
