With racing legend Jeff Gordon retiring (see NASCAR below), we thought we’d go down memory lane and pay tribute to another classic, Public Enemy, referencing some of their top hits in this week’s newsletter.

National Football League (NFL)

“By the Time I Get to Arizona”…The Arizona Cardinals held on to win a close game at home 34-31 Sunday night over the Cincinnati Bengals who have now lost back-to-back games after starting the season 8-0.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots “Shut Em Down,” discarding the Buffalo Bills 20-13 on Monday Night Football en route to a 10-0 record.

The NFL’s other undefeated squad, the 10-0 Carolina Panthers and head coach Ron Rivera say “Bring the Noise” as they continue to silence all doubters. Carolina MVP candidate, quarterback Cam Newton, put up five touchdowns in Sunday’s 44-16 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Young studs…The week’s top performances came from two unlikely rookie sources: Seattle Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls (no relation to Lou Rawls) who replaced injured starter and Skittles pitchman, Marshawn Lynch. Rawls rushed for 209 yards, as well as catching three passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. Fantasy Football fans everywhere are either kicking themselves or doing a victory dance for taking a chance on him. The other breakout game was delivered by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston who tied the NFL rookie record with five passing touchdowns in a 45-17 thrashing of the struggling Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles coach Chip Kelly‘s job may now be in jeopardy.

For the football fans in your life, keep in mind that the NFL has three games on turkey day. Schedule your meal accordingly…

College Football

Michigan State told the college football world “Don’t Believe the Hype” Saturday as they took down defending champion and previously undefeated Ohio State, 17-14, despite MSU missing their starting quarterback. The defeat ended OSU’s 23-game win streak and likely their chance of repeating as champs.

Speaking of first losses, #6 Oklahoma State fell to #10 Baylor, 45-35.

#4 Notre Dame struggled to beat a weak Boston College team at Fenway Park (Yes, where the Boston Red Sox play baseball) 19-16. This may cost Notre Dame in this week’s rankings.

With the teams ahead of them playing poorly, Iowa, Oklahoma, Florida and Michigan State fans are smiling as their teams will move up the rankings and are squarely in the national championship race.

College Basketball

Another big upset took place Saturday as #1 North Carolina lost 71-67 at Northern Iowa. The game was scheduled in Iowa because of a UNC tradition of rewarding seniors and playing in or near the student-athlete’s hometown. Unfortunately for UNC, Iowa native and senior point guard Marcus Paige was sidelined with a broken right hand. Sorry UNC, sometimes winning is “Harder Than You Think.”

National Basketball Association (NBA)

The Golden State Warriors are simply unstoppable. They matched the NBA’s best start at 15-0 Sunday beating the Denver Nuggets. Looking to break the record, they’ll “Burn Hollywood Burn” as they take on the struggling Los Angeles Lakers and aging star Kobe Bryant.

NASCAR

The NASCAR (you know, the sport where they drive around in circles at 200 mph) Chase championship was decided Sunday at Homestead-Miami. Kyle Busch won the race and his first championship despite missing the season’s initial 11 races with a broken leg. Legendary driver Jeff Gordon (#24 car) ended his illustrious 24-year career Sunday. In case you were worried, with roughly $150 million in career earnings, Gordon won’t miss any meals in retirement. Plus he signed on to join FOX’s NASCAR coverage to in 2016.
