Best Of Times, Worst Of Times

National Football League (NFL)

Week 10 has come and gone in the NFL and things are getting interesting.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” in Denver on Sunday. Ailing Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke Brett Favre’s NFL passing record but otherwise had the worst game of his career, throwing four interceptions, and was benched. Denver dropped to Kansas City Chiefs 29-13.

The 6-3 Green Bay Packers have lost their mojo, falling 18-16 to the Detroit Lions. After this third straight loss, the Packers now trail the 7-2 Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North. The Vikings rode running back Adrian Peterson’s 203 yards and a solid defensive performance to an easy victory over the Oakland Raiders.

“Revenge is a dish best served cold” and Tom Brady led the undefeated New England Patriots to a thrilling back and forth victory over the New York Giants, 27-26. The win broke a three game Pats losing streak to the Giants (including two Super Bowls).

In Sunday Night Football, the Arizona Cardinals, led by comeback player of the year Carson Palmer (who tore his ACL for the second time last season), went into the lion’s den and beat the Seattle Seahawks. In Monday Night Football action, the Houston Texans, behind their backup quarterback (the starter left with a concussion) and a stellar defense, shocked the Cincinnati Bengals 10-6, giving the Bengals their first loss.

College Football

Tuesday night you might notice changes in the College Football rankings but the top four teams all were victorious:

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Ohio State
  4. Notre Dame

#2 Alabama dominated #17 Mississippi State 31-6 behind the Heisman Trophy frontrunner, running back Derrick Henry, who tallied 204 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

#7 Stanford was upset by Oregon, likely squashing any Pac-12 Conference team’s chance of making the four-team College Football Playoff.

In the Big-12 Conference, #12 Oklahoma went to Waco Texas and took down #6 Baylor, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has thrown his hat in the Heisman Trophy race.

College Basketball

The college basketball season tipped off Friday and the top five teams were all victorious:

  1. North Carolina
  2. Kentucky
  3. Maryland
  4. Kansas
  5. Duke

We will keep you updated as the season heats up and teams push toward the NCAA basketball tournament (aka March Madness).

National Basketball Association (NBA)

“To Win or not to Win”…The Philadelphia 76ers are 0-11 and their fans are growing tired of a young team that keeps rebuilding.

On the other end of the spectrum, it is the “Best of Times” for Golden State Warriors fans. The defending champions are 11-0, led by reigning MVP Stephen Curry, and might challenge the NBA’s all-time regular season record of 72-10 held by Michael Jordan’s 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls. A fun fact: in the Warriors’ last win, Steph Curry passed his father, Dell Curry, on the NBA’s career 3-pt shooting list.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Ronda Rousey, the dynamic 28-year-old mixed martial arts fighter seen everywhere from promos to The Expendables, Furious 7 and Entourage movies lost her first UFC fight Saturday in Melbourne. The now former champion and ex-Olympic gold medalist will be fine, however, as a lucrative rematch is already in the works and she will remain on the cover of the upcoming UFC video game.
