Clash Of The Titans

College Football
Yes, it’s finally getting serious…every Tuesday evening between now and early December, college football fans across the country will be holding their breath as the College Football Playoff rankings are released. At end of the season, the top four teams will play each other for the National Championship. Here is the initial top-10:

RANK

SCHOOL

1

 Clemson

2

 LSU

3

 Ohio State

4

  Alabama

5

  Notre Dame

6

  Baylor

7

 Michigan State

8

 TCU

9

 Iowa

10

 Florida

The top college football matchup this past week was a “Clash of the Titans” as #4 ranked Alabama dominated previously undefeated #2 LSU, 30-16. This is sure to shake up the rankings this week. In a surprise twist, Alabama’s running back Derrick Henry dominated his LSU counterpart, Leonard Fournette, possibly overtaking Fournette as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner.

Alabama fans got more good news Saturday as rival Ole Miss, “The Blind Side” school, was upset in overtime by Arkansas on a miraculous play. This paves the way for Alabama to reach the SEC title game and improves their shot at the national championship.

Unsurprisingly, #1 ranked Clemson beat #16 Florida State, led by another Heisman Trophy hopeful, Deshaun Watson. Unlike the perfect Clemson Tigers, #7 Michigan State and #8 TCU both lost, ending their undefeated seasons and national championship hopes. Sad times in East Lansing and Forth Worth.

National Football League
We’re at the halfway point in the NFL season and there are three undefeated teams:

TEAM

Record

New England Patriots

8-0

Cincinnati Bengals

8-0

Carolina Panthers

8-0

The Green Bay Packers couldn’t find the kryptonite for the Carolina Panthers and Superman QB Cam Newton. The Panthers won despite a furious Packers comeback. Even though it’s the first time since 2010 that Packers MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers has lost back-to-back games, don’t feel too bad for him. His girlfriend Olivia Munn will cheer him up.

The Denver Broncos, and Papa John’s Pizza spokesman Peyton Manning, dropped from the undefeated ranks Sunday losing on the road to the Indianapolis Colts (Peyton’s old team for 14 seasons). To make matters worse, Manning fell three yards short of breaking the NFL’s all-time passing yards record, which is held by legendary quarterback and current Wrangler pitchman, Brett Farve.

The New England Patriots beat the Washington Redskins and improved their record to 8-0. Patriots fans are starting to make comparisons to 2007 when New England put together the only 16-0 regular season record in NFL history (but lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl).

Speaking of the Giants, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul returned to action Sunday after losing two fingers in a Fourth of July fireworks accident. JPP helped lead the G-Men to a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kaboom…

In the nationally televised games, the Philadelphia Eagles evened their record at 4-4, winning a divisional grudge match in overtime against the Dallas Cowboys. That’s the sixth game in a row the Cowboys have lost without injured QB Tony Romo on the field and fans feel like they’re watching a sinking ship…On Monday Night Football, the Chicago Bears edged the San Diego Chargers in a battle of disappointing teams preparing for next season.

National Basketball Association
The defending NBA Champions, the Golden State Warriors, are 8-0 and the league’s only undefeated team. Last year’s MVP Stephen Curry is leading the NBA in scoring, averaging 32 points per game. No one should be surprised by either of those facts.

In the Eastern Conference, LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers are on top at 6-1, followed by the Atlanta Hawks, who despite losing key players in the offseason are 7-2, followed by the Toronto Raptors and surprising Detroit Pistons at 5-2.

The Biggest Loser…Take pity on your friends who are Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers or New Orleans Pelicans fans as their teams are all winless. The league’s most disappointing team thus far has to be the Pelicans. They stink despite having one of the NBA’s best players, Anthony Davis. Only one direction to go now…
