A League Of Their Own

Baseball

As you’ve probably heard by now, the Kansas City Royals won the World Series on Sunday. They beat out the New York Mets by winning four of the five games in the series.

Game five was a nail biter. The Royals were trailing 0-2 until the 9th inning when they woke up and scored two runs. All tied up, the Royals pulled ahead with five more runs in the 12th inning.

It was kind of a big deal. The Royals made it to the World Series last year, only to lose to the San Francisco Giants. But now after 30 years of waiting, Kansas City fans can finally call themselves World Champs. Cue the parade!

Major League Baseball is on hiatus for a while, as the next season isn’t scheduled to begin until April 3, 2016. Feel free to take a nap and we’ll touch base in the spring.

Basketball

If you want to talk basketball with NBA fans in your life, get to know Stephen (Steph) Curry of the Golden State Warriors. Folks are referring to him as “terrifying” and an “assassin.” What they mean is: he’s really, really good. And he has an unassuming baby face that makes him all the more endearing.

The NBA season is only a week old, but Curry is already killing it. The reigning MVP scored 53 points Saturday, 30 points Monday and the defending champion Warriors are 4-0. Another undefeated squad is the surprising Detroit Pistons, led by an emerging star, Andre Drummond. After finishing an embarrassing 32-50 last season, the Pistons are starting off stronger than anyone could have imagined…stay tuned to see if it lasts.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are 3-1 and look like early championship contenders behind returning all-world superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

College Football

The University of Miami Hurricanes had a rough time last week, losing 58-0 and then firing their head coach. But over the weekend they came out on top with one of the most unbelievable plays in college football history. With Duke leading and just six seconds left, the Hurricanes took the kickoff and passed the ball back and forth across the field eight times in one of the most epic displays of hot potato ever seen. The Hurricanes scored a triumphant touchdown at the last second, but there’s some controversy as to whether it should have counted. Check out the play here.

Notre Dame and Temple went back and forth on Halloween, but ultimately the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame pulled out the victory, 24-20. Stanford also came from behind to take down Washington for another victory, possibly paving a path to the four-team college football playoff.

Pro Football

The New Orleans Saints topped the New York Giants on Sunday 52-49. Saints quarterback Drew Brees impressed with his passing skills and became just the 8th quarterback in NFL history to throw seven touchdowns in a game. Eli Manning, the New York Giants quarterback, wasn’t far behind with six touchdowns. Close Eli…but not close enough.

The Minnesota Vikings are doing surprisingly well with a 5-2 record so far. Teddy Bridgewater, Adrian Peterson and a solid defense are giving Vikings fans hope for a playoff appearance.

Sunday Night Football was a battle of undefeated teams as the Denver Broncos hosted the Green Bay Packers. Denver’s quarterback, Peyton Manning, outshined Packers’ quarterback and defending MVP, Aaron Rodgers. The Broncos’ stellar defense stymied Rodgers and helped raise Denver’s record to 7-0.

On Monday Night Football, in a battle of #1 overall draft picks, Cam Newton and his Carolina Panthers outlasted Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in rainy Charlotte in overtime despite a furious 20-point Colts comeback.

Several NFL teams suffered major injuries to star players including Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., who might have played his last NFL game. Ouch.
