Sports nirvana has arrived as this is the only time all year that all four major US professional sports leagues, MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA are in action, plus college football is in full swing.

Major League Baseball

The World Series starts Tuesday and we have the National League champion New York Mets taking on the American League champs (and last year’s runner up) Kansas City Royals in a best-of-seven series. This might be called an 80’s throwback matchup as the last time the Mets won was 1986, and the Royals 1985.

The Mets have three stud pitchers in Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey, as well as the MLB playoffs’ star to date, Daniel Murphy, who has homered in a playoff record six straight games. The Royals have an aggressive lineup, great bullpen and the experience of getting to the World Series last year. Here is the series schedule:

College Football

Can I have my job back now? JT Barrett, the former starter at quarterback, scored five TDs and led #1 Ohio State to a blowout victory over Rutgers, 49-7. #2 Baylor lost QB Seth Russell to injury, which may cost them a shot at the National Championship. Previously undefeated #3 Utah was blown out in Los Angeles losing to USC and their interim coach 42-24.

Another unbelievable finish took place in Atlanta as #9 Florida State lost to Georgia Tech on a blocked field goal followed by a 78-yd return for a TD as time expired. The University of Miami, a 1980’s and 90’s top college football program, got embarrassed by #6 Clemson and then dropped the “Sledgehammer” and fired their head coach.

National Football League

The NFL went hi-tech this week and live streamed (as opposed to broadcasting on TV) the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars game from London, exclusively on Yahoo! The Jags won a close game, 34-31. The Carolina Panthers showed the “Eye of the Tiger” and improved to 6-0 behind QB Cam Newton and a stingy defense, beating the struggling Philadelphia Eagles 27-16. In the other national game, the Arizona Cardinals outlasted the Baltimore Ravens in the desert to improve to 5-2.

Rivalry Week…The New England Patriots reminded the New York Jets that “We are the Champions” winning 30-23 behind a three TD performance from Tom Brady. The other Big Apple team (thought they both play in New Jersey), the New York Giants, fared better as they held off the Dallas Cowboys 27-20 to take over first place in a weak NFC East.

National Hockey League

The NHL’s standout team is by far the Montreal Canadiens who are an impressive 9-0. Les Habitants lead the league in fewest goals allowed (1.3), and are second in goals scored per game (3.9).

National Basketball Association

The NBA season begins Tuesday and TINK Sports has a complete NBA preview: https://tinksports.com/2015-2016-nba-season-preview/

For the Cliff Notes version, last year’s Finals teams the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors look good entering the season. The “Wild Wild West” Western Conference is far better than the East with five legitimate title contenders.

“Follow the Leader”…Kobe Bryant, possibly entering his last season, and Carmelo Anthony look to lead the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks back to glory but may struggle again this season.
