College Basketball

Pick of the litter…Selection Sunday (where the teams that make the NCAA tournament are announced) took place this past weekend, and there were several surprises…though some were not surprised at all. Apparently, the brackets were leaked on Twitter removing suspense for half the teams.

Check out the NCAA tournament brackets to see when and where your favorite teams play this week. Catch the games on CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV starting Tuesday night.

After big wins in their conference tournaments over the weekend, Kansas, North Carolina and Oregon are all #1 seeds. Virginia, despite losing to North Carolina in the ACC final, also earned a top spot, upsetting Michigan State fans who expected their squad to be a top seed after winning the Big 10 championship on Sunday. Here are the top-4 seeds in each region.

East

Midwest

1 North Carolina 1 Virginia
2 Xavier 2 Michigan State
3 West Virginia 3 Utah
4 Kentucky 4 Iowa State

South

West

1 Kansas 1 Oregon
2 Villanova 2 Oklahoma
3 Miami (Fla) 3 Texas A&M
4 California 4 Duke

Kansas is the #1 overall seed and may have the #1 fan in Uncle Anthony.

Who’s picking up the tab? The majority of March Madness games kick off Thursday, St. Patrick’s Day (there are four “play-in” games Tuesday and Wednesday). Toast your squad with a green beverage and may the luck of the Irish be with you.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Seems like the NBA could use a pick-me-up. Even though most of the hoops talk this month centers around college, we haven’t forgotten the NBA, as the playoffs are a month away.

In a battle of elite Western Conference teams, the San Antonio Spurs (56-10), second in the West, remained a perfect 32-0 at home by beating the third place Oklahoma City Thunder (44-21) on Sunday. The Spurs rode studs Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge, who combined for 50 points, in the 93-85 victory.

The Spurs will need to pick up even more steam with a brutal week ahead, taking on West heavyweights the Los Angeles Clippers (#4 team), Portland Trail Blazers (#6 team), and Golden State Warriors (#1 team).

Stick with the pick…The Eastern Conference’s top team, and nearly everyone’s NBA Finals choice, the Cleveland Cavaliers, defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 114-90 on Sunday. The Cavs were led by LeBron James (27 points), who despite coming out of high school and thus never playing in the NCAA tournament, was the #1 pick in the 2003 NBA draft. The Cavs lost to the Utah Jazz on Monday but have won six of their last eight games and working to right the ship as the playoffs approach.

The Michael Jordan-owned Charlotte Hornets (37-29) are on fire having won eight of their last 10 games. The Hornets’ Kemba Walker, former University of Connecticut standout, is at the center of the team’s success. This is nothing new for Walker. Five years ago, with UConn on the verge of missing the NCAA tournament, Walker led his team to five straight victories to win the Big East tournament, and then six games in a row to take home the 2011 National Championship.

National Hockey League (NHL)

After being taken off the ice on a stretcher Thursday, Montreal Canadiens star defenseman P.K. Subban might have a bone to pick with his teammate who inadvertently hit him in the head. Subban was motionless on the ice for 10 minutes while the medical staff tended to him but later tweeted that he was doing better. Maybe his $10M donation to Montreal Children’s Hospital gave him good karma.

National Football League (NFL)

NFL agency, the league’s version of musical chairs, began last week. Keep your eye on the defending champion Denver Broncos who are losing players left and right. Starting QB Peyton Manning retired, and backup QB Brock Osweiler picked the Houston Texans over Denver. Three other Super Bowl contributors are moving on as well.

Finally, and finally…an NFL spokesman acknowledged this week a link between football and brain disease.
