Star Studded

Spider-man: Homecoming was the star of stars at the box office this weekend raking in over $117 million in its debut.

In the sports world, baseball is having its All-Star festivities, and young NBA talent is on full display in pre-season summer league.

If you think pro sports is always on, you’re right…sort of. Wednesday and Thursday this week are the only two days on the calendar with no regular season games in any of the four major North American sports leagues. #SportsReprieve

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Show me the money! With the ink barely settled on Steph Curry’s monster contract that made him the highest paid player in North American sports, James Harden topped Curry’s deal with a four-year $170 million extension. Don’t have a calculator handy? That’s a cool $42.5 million per year. The question now is will he grow the beard even longer in celebration?

The NBA is in the middle of its pre-season summer leagues where young players are working hard to impress coaches and fans. One prospective star you won’t see is #1 overall pick Philadelphia 76ersMarkelle Fultz who turned his ankle and was shut down for the summer by the team.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Baseball has finally reached its All Star break after some 90 games. The crème de la crème are the Houston Astros in the American League (60-29 record) and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League (61-29 mark).

Most MLB players are at home or on a beach resting but the game’s best are participating in the Home Run Derby (Monday) and All Star Game (Tuesday) in Miami. New York Yankees super-stud rookie Aaron Judge, who stands 6-7” and weighs 282 pounds, won the Home Run Derby belting several monstrous 500+ foot shots. The performance reminded fans of the famous “Chicks Dig the Longball” era in the late-90s.

The All Star Game takes place Tuesday night where the league’s top players will be strutting their stuff. The MLB regular season resumes Friday and runs through October 1.

Boxing

Liquidity issues? Undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, with the ironic nickname “Money”, apparently has them. Money Mayweather asked the IRS to wait a couple more months – until after his next fight in September – so he can scrape together the funds to pay his 2015 tax bill. Not unreasonable until you consider that he earned north of $220 million from his 2015 fight with Manny Pacquiao, and has an estimated career earnings of $700 million. #GoMoneyGo #Liquidity

Tennis

Manic Monday they’re calling it. Across the pond at Wimbledon, Monday was tennis nirvana as all remaining players (16 men and 16 women) were in action.

The biggest Men’s casualty was #4 Rafael Nadal. The 15-time Major winner lost in a marathon deciding fifth set, 15-13.

In the Women’s draw, #1 seed Angelique Kerber fell in three sets, while Americans Venus Williams and Coco Vandeweghe advanced to the quarterfinals.

A little tennis with your breakfast this weekend? The Women’s Finals will take place Saturday morning ET and the Men’s Sunday morning ET.
