Mom’s The Word

In this week’s TINK we celebrate our MVPs: our moms. Spread the love by sharing this week’s newsletter with your favorite mamas out there.

The NBA and NHL playoffs moved on to the second round this week with no major surprises. In football, the NFL held its annual college Draft last week, and many teams reloaded their rosters with young talent.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Western Conference:

After putting up the mother of all regular seasons, the Golden State Warriors won their first round matchup and then beat the Portland Trail Blazers 118-106 Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in their second round series. The Warriors played without all-world guard Steph Curry, currently nursing a knee injury, and were led by Klay Thomson, who scored 37 points in the victory.

The NBA’s second-best team, the San Antonio Spurs blew out the Oklahoma City Thunder by 32 points on Saturday but lost a nail-biter Monday night, 98-97. The series is now tied 1-1 and moves to Oklahoma City Friday.

Eastern Conference:

Cutting it close…The Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat both needed seven games to win their series versus the Indiana Pacers and Charlotte Hornets, respectively, on Sunday. The Raptors and Heat advance to the second round where they will face each other starting Tuesday.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are marching along toward a repeat NBA Finals appearance, kicking the Atlanta Hawks to the curb on Monday 104-93 to claim a 1-0 series lead. The Cavs were led by LeBron James who tallied 25 points and nine assists.

Olympics

Obrigado Mãe/Gracias Madre/Thanks Mama! The 2016 Summer Olympics are just three months away with the opening ceremonies kicking off August 5. To help get you excited about the Summer games, here is an inspiring Mother’s Day Olympics video.

National Hockey League (NHL)

 Eastern Conference

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals Monday to claim a 2-1 series lead over the league’s best regular season team
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders series is tied 1-1 and resumes Tuesday night

Western Conference

  • The Louis Blues and Dallas Stars series is tied 1-1after the Blues won in overtime Sunday
  • The San Jose Sharks defeated the Nashville Predators Sunday to take a 2-0 series lead

National Football League (NFL)

Save the drama for yo mama…The 2016 NFL draft took place last week, and as expected, the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterbacks Jared Goff (University of California) and Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) #1 and #2, respectively. The day was filled with drama as several other teams made big trades to get their guy.

Mama said there would be days like this? Really? Laremy Tunsil lost roughly $7 million on Thursday as he slipped to #13 in the Draft.  Apparently his Twitter and Instagram accounts were hacked and a video of him smoking weed through a gas mask was posted online.

Dressed to impress? Fashion was also a big part of the Draft festivities in Chicago. Check out Ezekiel Elliot, the Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick, making a fashion statement.

Sprichst du Deutsch? How do you say fast learner in German? The Minnesota Vikings selected German wide receiver Moritz Boehringer in the sixth round. Boehringer became the first player in NFL history to be drafted straight from Europe. Even more incredibly, he started playing football just five years ago after watching Vikings running back Adrian Peterson on You Tube. #WelcomeRookie #MomMustBeProud

Soccer

Leicester City (pronounced Les-ter) won the English Premier League title for the first time ever. So what, you say? At 5,000-1 odds it is one of the most improbable outcomes in club soccer (or football as most of the world calls it) or even sports history. Leicester City was nearly relegated (sent down to a lower soccer level because they were so bad) after last season. Instead, they remained in the big league and won the title, led by star striker Jamie Vardy.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Say it ain’t so…Miami Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon was suspended 80 games (about half the baseball season), without pay, for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing-drug policy. Gordon, who claims he didn’t “knowingly” take steroids, won the National League batting title last year. His mom must be giving him a piece of her mind.
