Roar! Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom delivered an eye-popping $150 million domestic debut and an even more impressive $700 million worldwide gross.

Most of the juice in the global sports world the next few weeks will come from the World Cup, which is nearing the knockout stage.

Let’s see what’s going on in sports…

TINK Sports Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) The World Cup is moving through its group stage, and many fans are on edge to see who advances

2) The NBA handed out its postseason awards Monday and James Harden was the top dog taking home league MVP honors

3) NFL free agency begins Sunday, and it’s not just about on-the-field play

Soccer

Fans worldwide are watching the “beautiful game” on display at this year’s World Cup in Russia.

The field of 32 will be cut down to 16 by Thursday, and many countries and fans are holding their breath. Some of the heavyweights that have advanced, include:

  • Uruguay
  • Russia
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • France

No Sleep till Saransk? Portugal and their mega-star Cristiano Ronaldo advanced to the knockout stage, but just barely, tying Iran 1-1 Monday. The Iranian fans didn’t make it easy for Ronaldo, partying outside his hotel room the night before the match at Mordovia Arena. Ronaldo missed a critical penalty shot during the game. Any connection?

Argentina, a favorite to advance is in trouble and must beat Nigeria Tuesday to move forward. Another powerhouse, Brazil, needs a win or tie Wednesday to ensure their spot in the sweet 16.

Match to watch…England and Belgium have dominated their opponents and play each other Thursday. Both have secured spots in the next round regardless of the outcome.

Schedule alert – the knockout stage begins June 30 so be prepared for your soccer loving friends to be “busy” in the late mornings and early afternoons (10:00am ET and 2:00 pm ET matches) starting Saturday.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Drum roll please…The NBA gave out its postseason awards Monday night. The big winners were:

  • MVP – James Harden, Houston Rockets. Harden had a fabulous season and his Rockets almost derailed the champion Golden State Warriors but ultimately lost in seven games.
  • Rookie of the Year – Ben Simmons, Philadelphia 76ers. Are you really a rookie if you sit out a year due to injury? Voters said yes and this phenom took home the trophy.
  • Defensive Player of the Year – Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz. The buck stops here with this French-born defensive standout who won the award despite missing 26 games due to injury.

National Football League (NFL)

Energizer Bunny…Even though the regular season doesn’t kick off until September 6, the NFL hype machine never stops.

Free agency, where players can sign with any team, starts Sunday. Look for teams and fans to be in a frenzy for this high-stakes game of musical chairs.

Here are some of the notable free agents:

  • Colin Kaepernick – The former San Francisco 49ers QB who started the National Anthem protest movement was not signed last year either but is still good enough to be on an NFL roster. His ongoing collusion grievance against NFL owners makes matters complicated.
  • Eric Reid – Kaepernick’s former teammate also has a grievance about his kneeling during the Anthem.
  • Dez Bryant – formerly a star receiver with the Dallas Cowboys, Bryant might have to take a reduced role (and salary).

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Lucky 13…How many employers have you had? Oakland A’s pitcher Edwin Jackson tied an MLB record when he played for his 13th team Monday.
