Head Of The Class

It’s getting colder outside but the sports action is heating up with MLB playoffs down to the final four teams and football in full swing.

MLB

The best-of-seven National and American League Championship Series are underway, and in the AL, the Toronto Blue Jays returned home and won 11-8 over the Kansas City Royals to cut the Royals’ series lead to 2-1.

Move over Kevin James, there is a new “King of Queens.”  Daniel Murphy has homered in four consecutive games and the New York Mets lead the Chicago Cubs 2-0 behind Murphy’s heroics and great pitching.  The NL series resumes Tuesday in Chicago.

Whoever wins the World Series, a long drought will be over for the team and its fans. See the chart below for the suffering. (No typo – it has indeed been over 100 years of misery for the Chicago Cubs).

In one of the craziest endings ever (without exaggeration), #7 Michigan State beat #12 Michigan on a misplay by the punter with 10 seconds left. It’s gotten so bad that Michigan Athletic Director urged angry fans to lay off “Person of Interest” senior punter Blake O’Neill.

After losing their first game, Stanford won its fifth straight game trouncing UCLA 56-35, and now has their sights on a PAC-12 title. They might run up against #4 ranked and 6-0 Utah who handled Arizona State 34-18. The two big SEC games this weekend saw #10 Alabama crush Texas A&M 41-23 and #6 LSU beat #8 Florida 35-28 behind Heisman Trophy leader Leonard Fournette’s 180 rushing yards and two TDs.

NFL

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots “Empire” continue their assault on the league, again defeating their “Deflategate” opponents, the Indianapolis Colts, 34-27. Despite throwing for a franchise record 503 yards, Philip Rivers and his San Diego Chargers fell to the 6-0 Green Bay Packers.

At the “Head of the Class,” two undefeated teams impressed Sunday with road victories as the Carolina Panthers (5-0) avenged four-straight losses to the Seattle Seahawks beating the home team 27-23, and the Cincinnati Bengals (6-0) loaded up on chicken wings before taking care of the Buffalo Bills. The final undefeated team, the 6-0 Denver Broncos, saw their struggling QB Payton Manning “Saved by the…Defense” as they barely got by a 2-4 Cleveland Browns team 26-23 in overtime.

“Breaking Bad”…The Detroit Lions finally got their first win (the last NFL team to do so) beating the Chicago Bears 37-34 in overtime behind the reemergence of struggling stars Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Speaking of bad, in an NFC East grudge match and awfully played game with seven combined turnovers, the Philadelphia Eagles took care of the New York Giants Monday night 27-7 to tie their New York rivals for first place atop the division. The only thing pleasing about watching the game was the halftime debut of a Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer from Disney and LucasFilm. May the force be with you.
