Don’t Blame It On The Rain

Hurricane Joaquin has passed…and here is what is going on in sports.

MLB

Finally the chill is in the air and October playoff baseball is here. The Fall Classic has some new faces and some familiar places.

In the American League the Wild Card game will be played Tuesday night as the Houston Astros visit Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees for a one-game playoff. The Yanks will be without their former ace pitcher CC Sabathia who checked himself into alcohol rehab Monday. Jay-Z and Beyonce might be at Yankee Stadium since it’s not as cool to be seen at Brooklyn Nets games these days.

The winner will face the Kansas City Royals, who are looking to return to the World Series after coming oh so close last year. In the other Divisional Series, the Rogers Center and all of Canada will be rocking as the Toronto Blue Jays, a team the hasn’t been in the playoffs since 1993, battle the Texas Rangers, one of the hottest teams in baseball since the All Star break.

In the National League the Wild Card game will be played Wednesday night when the Chicago Cubs visit the Pittsburgh Pirates. The winner goes on the play the St. Louis Cardinals, the best team in Baseball throughout the year with 100 wins. In the other series it’s Nas vs. Snoop Dogg as New York Mets take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in a matchup of current and former New York baseball teams.

During the MLB Playoffs every pitch matters so enjoy it.

NCAA Football

We begin with blowout city as #13 Alabama destroyed #8 Georgia 38-10 and #25 Florida #3 crushed Ole Miss 38-10. Down in Death Valley, #12 Clemson danced in the Purple Rain over #6 Notre Dame 24-22. The biggest shocker of the week was unranked Arizona State knocking off #7 UCLA in the City of Angels.

Home cooking…leading Heisman Trophy candidate RB Leonard Fournette of #9 LSU set a record rushing for over 200 yards in his third straight game in a big home victory over Eastern Michigan.

NFL

The NFL season is a quarter done and there are five 4-0 teams (plus the 3-0 New England Patriots who had a bye). The perfect club includes the “Ohio Players” Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers (no shock) plus the Carolina Panthers (surprising) and the former “Outkast” Atlanta Falcons (astonishing given they were 6-10 and fired their head coach last year). In those cities start clearing out the first few weekends in January as 83% of teams that start 4-0 make the playoffs.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s? The New York Jets brought the Uptown Funk to London and beat the Miami Dolphins 27-14 at Wembley Stadium, the Beatles home turf, in a rare 9:30am ET start.

In a related note…Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn’t even taken over the Apprentice and we’ve had our first NFL “You’re Fired” moment. One day after the loss to the Jets, the 1-3 Miami Dolphins axed Coach Joe Philbin and replaced him with interim coach and former player Dan Campbell. The Dolphins are the NFL’s celebrity team as billionaire owner Stephen Ross recruited Gloria Estefan, Marc AnthonyVenus Williams and Serena Williams as minority owners, so The Terminator may have to take notes.

Tears for Fears go to the NFL’s only 0-4 team, the Detroit Lions, who lost to the Seattle Seahawks in a controversial ending despite Seattle not having their All-Pro running back and Skittles spokesman Marshawn Lynch. The New Orleans Saints barely avoided the ranks of 0-4 themselves as they squeaked by the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night on Drew Brees’ 400th TD pass in overtime, which came right after a Saints missed field goal at the end of the game. The old veteran played hurt but still has juice left in that shoulder.
