Contenders and Pretenders

It’s official, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are tying the knot. The former Deal or No Deal actress picked her winning suitcase, and is likely leaving Suits after this season.

Disney scored again over the Thanksgiving weekend with Coco, raking in an impressive $71 million and bumping Justice League from the #1 position at the box office.

On the field this past weekend football was the name of the game, and contenders began to emerge.

Here are three things you need to know:

1) The Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are separating themselves from the NFL pack

2) The college football playoffs will be determined by a handful of conference championship games this weekend

3) The Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors are currently the NBA’s top teams

National Football League (NFL)

The Thanksgiving Day NFL contests were duds so let’s hope the turkey, stuffing and cranberries were worth the anticipation. Eleven games into the NFL regular season (with five more remaining) the contenders are separating themselves from the pretenders.

The cream of the crop are the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles who all won Sunday.

The Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints also look good as the playoffs approach.

Dude, who stole my chain? Even Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott are baffled by this one.

Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib and Oakland Raiders receiver Michael Crabtree got into it Sunday. Crabtree went after Talib five minutes into the game, and an all-out brawl between the two teams broke out. Both players were ejected and can expect hefty fines.

What was the beef all about? During a game last season, Talib ripped Crabtree’s chain off his neck, and Crabtree was seeking payback.

Who is he wearing? This coming weekend be sure to look at the NFL players’ feet. Why? The NFL is bringing back “My Cleats, My Cause” where players are allowed to wear cleats of their own design in support of a charity.

College Football

Chaos on campus. With previously undefeated #1 Alabama and #2 Miami losing this weekend, the college football playoff picture is in flux.

Alabama, considered the best team in the country and a virtual lock to make the four-team college football playoffs going into the game, lost to arch-rival Auburn Saturday. Alabama is now on the outside of the top-four, falling to #5.

Forget beer pong, the game of choice with coeds this weekend will be musical chairs. These eight teams are the playoff contenders vying for the four spots:

Clemson, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Auburn, Alabama, Miami, Georgia, and Ohio State

Saturday’s conference championship games will finalize the college football playoffs.

Big 12 – #2 Oklahoma vs. #10 TCU

SEC – #4 Auburn vs. #6 Georgia

ACC – #1 Clemson vs. #7 Miami

Big 10 – #3 Wisconsin vs. #8 Ohio State

Major League Baseball (MLB)

A little short on cash for your holiday gifts? Players (and execs) of this year’s 10 MLB playoff teams are getting a boost – a cool $84.5 million to split among them from the 2017 playoff revenue pool. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Houston Astros, winners of the 2017 World Series, receive $439K per player
  • Los Angeles Dodgers, the World Series runner up, get $260K per player
  • Even the Minnesota Twins, who lost in a one-game Wild Card matchup, rake in $19K per player. Not bad for three hours of work.

Players can finally afford to get their kids the classic G.I. Joe with the Kung Fu grip.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

The Boston Celtics, owners of the league’s top record, keep rolling along with the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors. These teams and their fans have visions of an NBA Championship.

Legitimate contenders? The NBA season is still young – only about a quarter complete – but Detroit Pistons and Philadelphia 76ers fans are smiling as both teams are near the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Let’s see where they find themselves in February.

A pretender, the Memphis Grizzlies, fired head coach David Fizdale Monday after losing eight in a row and falling to 7-12 on the season. Thank goodness for guaranteed contracts – coach Fizz won’t be skipping any mortgage payments.
