Laughter, tears, overtime, and the biggest flub in award show history were all part of the 2017 Oscars.

La La Land dominated the night with six wins, but lost out to Moonlight for Best Picture. This was a historic moment as Moonlight was the first all-black cast to take home the top golden statue. The win-turned-loss became a shining moment for La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz who deserved the night’s sportsmanship award.

The world of sports was represented with O.J. Made in America taking home the statue for Best Documentary.

Bye bye Oscar ballots and hello basketball brackets. College and professional basketball are back in focus with the playoffs right around the corner.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

The NBA’s version of La La Land is the Golden State Warriors, who lead the league with a 50-9 record. Their dominance is so great that they clinched a playoff berth in February when the season doesn’t end until mid-April. Warriors leader and two-time defending MVP Steph Curry is so good he helped a fan win $5,000 during a timeout.

The Warriors are favored to return to the NBA Finals and face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the third straight year – this despite four-time MVP LeBron James being sidelined with strep throat. Maybe he got it from his son, LeBron James Jr., who is only 12 but has serious game.

National Football League (NFL)

Calling all pro football prospects. The annual NFL Combine, aka meat market. is taking place this week. College players are sweating it out in Indianapolis getting sized up by NFL coaches from around the country. Read tons of weigh-ins, physical assessments and mental tests. ESPN spiced up the coverage with former NFL lineman Damien Woody bench pressing one of their own.

National Hockey League (NHL)

Manchester by the Sea gave love to the NHL featuring a Boston Bruins game.  The real-life Boston team is hanging on to playoff contention in the Eastern Conference, while the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins are the class of the East. The Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks lead the Western Conference as the NHL playoffs are just over one month away.

Today in film and sports history…Happy 40th Anniversary to the classic hockey flick Slapshot.

 NASCAR

Pedal to the metal. The Daytona 500, NASCAR’s most prestigious event, took place Sunday with plenty of stars in attendance. Kurt Busch ran a wreck-free race, avoiding multiple crashes on the track, to take home his first Daytona 500 win.

College Basketball

Overrated…Not so much. The Meryl Streep lifetime achievement award for women’s college basketball goes to University of Washington’s Kelsey Plum. She needed 54 points to become the top scorer in women’s college history. The 5’8” star scored 57 points, three points shy of the single-game record. Mic drop.

Still can’t touch this…the #1 ranked UConn women won again Monday and remain undefeated this season at 29-0, extending their record all-time winning streak to 104 games.

On the men’s side, #1 Gonzaga was not as fortunate as their unblemished campaign came to an end. BYU beat them over the weekend, and Gonzaga became the last men’s team to fall from the ranks of the undefeated. Surprising? Very. Especially considering this was the first time Gonzaga trailed in the second half of any home game this season.

Redefining “business casual,” all-time college and pro basketball legend Bill Walton, a proud hippie and current broadcaster, decided to take off his t-shirt in the middle of an ESPN broadcast.

In a battle of two of the nation’s top teams, #5 UCLA dropped #4 Arizona over the weekend, led by super freshman Lonzo Ball. Dad got son Lonzo in hot water when he said his son will only play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Great choice, but there’s only one problem: the NBA drafts college players so it’s not their decision to make.

For most teams this is the final week of regular season play. A week before the March Madness, the new AP top-5 teams are:

#1 Kansas

#2 Villanova

#3 UCLA

#4 Gonzaga

#5 North Carolina
