Win Big or Go Home

The Golden Globe nominations are out which made us think of some of this week’s winners and losers in the sports world…

College Football

And the Heisman trophy (the one with the dramatic pose) goes to…Derrick Henry of Alabama. The outstanding junior running back set SEC rushing records and led his team to the #2 ranking and a spot in the college football Final-Four. Henry is the first running back to win the Heisman since 2009 when fellow Alabama running back Mark Ingram became the first player in the football powerhouse’s history to win college football’s most prestigious award.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

It finally happened – The Golden State Warriors (24-1) lost their first game of the season, falling on the road Saturday to the young and talented Milwaukee Bucks. The Warriors, who had won 28 straight games dating back to last season, were seeking to become the first team in NBA history to go 7-0 on a road trip. But it was not to be.

Now that the Warriors have stumbled we can turn the “Spotlight” to some of the NBA’s other 29 teams. Stay tuned.

National Football League (NFL)

While we wait to see Will Smith, Alec Baldwin and Luke Wilson in “Concussion,” the movie about head injuries and the NFL (see trailer here), Week 14 games brought us some excitement and playoff movement:

The Carolina Panthers are 13-0 and led by MVP front-runner quarterback Cam Newton. He just might be ‘The Martian” as he is playing out of this this world. Newton passed for 3 TDs in a 38-0 victory over the “Trainwreck” Atlanta Falcons who have lost six in a row after starting 6-1.

Once again there is “Joy” in Philly as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Buffalo Bills, 23-20. Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy tried to exact revenge for his offseason trade to the Bills but unlike Lenoardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant,” McCoy was unsuccessful.

After stumbling to two straight losses, the New England Patriots righted the ship, beating the Houston Texans Sunday night, 27-6. The win, coupled with Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals losses, moves the Patriots back into first place in the AFC. Sadly for the Bengals, they lost more than the game as starting QB Andy Dalton broke his thumb and may miss several weeks.

In the Monday night game, the New York Giants got outstanding performances from QB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr. (who graduated from the same high school in New Orleans, 11 years apart) to beat the Miami Dolphins. The win puts the Giants in a three-way tie for the NFC East lead at 6-7 with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins.

National Hockey League (NHL)

Just in case you haven’t been following, the Dallas Stars have the best record in the NHL (yes they play hockey in Dallas), paced by a great offense led by Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.

The Eastern Conference leaders are the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens, though the Canadiens have cooled off recently. Just behind them are the red-hot New York Islanders who in the offseason became hipper as they moved to Brooklyn from Long Island.

The “Best Performance in a Leading Role” thus far goes to Chicago Blackhawks’ Right Winger Patrick Kane who extended his consecutive-points-scored streak to 26 straight games on Sunday with an assist versus the Vancouver Canucks.

College Basketball

March Madness is still a few months away but here is the Associated Press’ Top-5:

  1. Michigan State
  2. Kansas
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Kentucky
  5. Iowa State

Preseason #1 North Carolina (now ranked #11) fell for the second time this season, losing a thriller Saturday at Texas, 84-82. Texas’ Javan Felix got off a shot that just barely left his fingertips as time expired for the victory.
