MTV brought us the 33rd Video Music Awards on Sunday, and music’s brightest were serving up new songs and old classics. Beyonce was selling Lemonade and took home eight Moonman trophies including video of the year as well as best female video. Another fantastic femme, Rihanna, won the Video Vanguard award (at the ripe old age of 28), and performed four times. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj had social media abuzz with their “Side to Side” performance while Britney Spears made her first appearance since 2007. For your pleasure, a fashion recap, including Blue Ivy’s $11,000 dress.

Continuing in the VMA spirit, this week’s newsletter comes with a musical theme.

National Football League (NFL)

Singing the blues…the Dallas Cowboys are once again without oft-injured star quarterback Tony Romo who broke a bone in his back in a preseason game versus the Seattle Seahawks Thursday. Diagnosis: Bad. Romo is expected to miss 6-10 weeks. Cowboy fans are wondering if it’s time to move on from their fragile star QB and to back rookie Dak Prescott. Beware Cowboys fans – the team went 1-11 without Romo last year after he broke his collarbone twice.

Not my song…San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick raised eyebrows last week choosing to sit during the National Anthem. Kaepernick’s reasoning: to protest racial injustice in America. His teammates and organization have given him space but former coach Jim Harbaugh, currently at the University of Michigan, doesn’t respect his former QB’s action. Surely more to come.

College Football

Forget about the top-40 music marathon this weekend, the college football season starts Thursday. Most top teams are in action, and the marquee matchups are:

#1 Alabama vs. #20 USC (Saturday)

#3 Oklahoma vs. #15 Houston (Saturday)

#18 Georgia vs. # 22 North Carolina (Saturday)

#4 Florida State vs. #11 Ole Miss the school from The Blind Side (Monday)

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Hotter than Ariana Grande and DJ Khaled, the Kansas City Royals are baseball’s streakiest team after going 16-3 in their last 19 games. Despite having appeared in the last two World Series (winning last year), memories are short and the pressure to make another playoff run is mounting in the Show Me state.

A star is born. The New York Yankees, who said goodbye to long-time veteran stars Alex Rodriguez and Marx Teixeira earlier this season, may have found their latest stud, catcher Gary Sanchez. Sanchez is having a rookie season for the ages, as he became the first player EVER to have 11 homeruns in his first 21 games.

Speaking of youth, in a battle of 12-year-olds in the Little League World Series, the Endwell, NY team, after getting a pep-talk from President Obama, defeated the South Korean squad. Pizza and Pokemon for everyone.

Tennis

Same old song?…the US Open, the fourth and final tennis Major of the year, started Monday and the favorites (to nobody’s surprise) are Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams. Djokovic, winner of four of the last five Men’s Grand Slams, including last year’s US Open, is playing through a wrist injury as he seeks his third career US Open title.

Williams won Wimbledon in July but lost early at the Rio Olympics and is nursing a shoulder injury herself. Amazingly, Serena is seeking her seventh US Open title and 23rd Grand Slam. No need for her to change songs.
