College Basketball

The college basketball regular season is now over and conference tournaments are underway. The big tournament, aka “March Madness,” hits full gear March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day). The college basketball selection show to determine who gets invited to the dance will take place this Sunday night.

In college basketball’s biggest rivalry, #8 North Carolina traveled eight miles down Tobacco Road and beat #17 Duke, 76-72, to win the ACC regular season title. UNC senior Brice Johnson had Canned Heat in his heels with 18 points and 21 rebounds.

Do the Stanky Leg…It’s been a really bad year in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. In December, eight Boston College basketball players were among the 30 affected by E.coli at a local Chipotle. With the basketball team losing Saturday and ending its ACC Conference season 0-18 they join the BC football team as winless (0-8) in conference play. The last time a major college team achieved that dubious distinction in both football and basketball was Georgia in 1943-44.

Not invited to the dance…The most talented player in the country, LSU’s freshman Ben Simmons, didn’t go to class and thus is ineligible to receive the John Wooden Award as the nation’s best college basketball player. In addition, his team continues to struggle and is in jeopardy of not making the NCAA tournament.

Twist and Shout…Yale beat Columbia 71-55 on Saturday night, clinching the Ivy League championship an its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1962.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

Sorry (not sorry) for stepping on your toes…New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony showed his frustration and bad judgment last week telling a heckling fan to ask Knicks owner James Dolan for a refund. Anthony apologized, but also said it was the team’s idea to say sorry (not sorry).

Despite beat the Detroit Pistons Saturday night, the Knicks have dropped 16 of their last 20 games. Before you feel too badly for Carmelo, remember that he’s still Shakin’ His Money Maker- he signed a five-year $124 million contract in 2014.

The Kobe Bryant farewell tour marches along as he and his Los Angeles Lakers hosted Steph Curry and the league leading, defending champion Golden State Warriors for the final time on Sunday. The Lakers (13-51), losers of 10 out of their last 13 games, stunned the Warriors (55-6), despite Bryant scoring only 12 points and sitting out the fourth quarter.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Nostradamus no longer…In UFC 196 Saturday night, Conor McGregor, the Irish mixed martial arts fighting sensation, lost to Nate Diaz despite predicting victory within 40 seconds. (McGregor had correctly forecasted several of his previous wins). Diaz, a heavy underdog, was an injury replacement and signed on to fight only 11 days prior to the event.

“I can’t feel my face when I’m with you”…Holy Holm (10-1), the fighter that stunned Ronda Rousey, is undefeated no longer as she lost to Miesha Tate in the UFC 196 undercard.

Tennis

Oh no…Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova failed a drug test for a substance, meldonium, that she has been using for 10 years. The drug was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency this year. Sharapova could face up to a four year ban from professional tennis.

National Football League (NFL)

The Last Waltz…Denver Broncos Super Bowl winning QB Peyton Manning announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday with an emotional speech. Manning, a five-time MVP and two-time Super Bowl champ will go down as one of the greatest players in NFL history. Oh and he made some hilarious commercials too.
