Hollywood’s biggest stars will be on display Sunday, and we’ll see if La La Land dominates the Oscars and continues its awards show dominance.
In the sports world, the NBA provided much of the entertainment as its best and brightest put on a show in New Orleans over the weekend.
National Basketball Association (NBA)
The NBA held its annual love fest, known as the All-Star weekend, in New Orleans. The festivities bring together top NBA talent and the entertainment world’s brightest stars.
Charlotte, North Carolina was the original location for the All-Star celebration, but the NBA wanted nothing to do with NC after they instituted the controversial HB2 limiting LGBT protection. The league quickly moved the action to NOLA…just in time for Mardi Gras. The move was particularly disappointing for Charlotte Hornets first-time all-star Kemba Walker who was hoping to play in front of the hometown fans.
With the shift to Cajun country, the food stepped it up a notch and the whole weekend took on a decidedly New Orleanian feel:
- Welcome back Gordon…current Houston Rockets guard Eric Gordon, who once played for the New Orleans Pelicans, won the 3-point shootout in an overtime shootout.
- It’s all in the genes…The Dunk Contest winner was Glenn Robinson III, the son of former NBA player and #1 overall draft pick, Glenn Robinson II.

- The All-Star game itself had plenty of flash and absolutely zero defense. New Orleans star forward Anthony Davis (affectionately known as “The Unibrow”) took home MVP honors leading the West to a 192-182 victory (the most combined points in the game’s history). Davis scored a record 52 points breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s All-Star game record.

Wilt who? He’s the NBA legend that once scored a record 100 points in a game and claimed to have scored with 20,000 women.
- Also representing NOLA, and showing that basketball players are not all talk, New Orleans assistant coach and former player Robert Pack is helping heal wounds between the community and the police.
- New Orleans sports fans have more than just the All-Star weekend to be psyched about. In a highly unusual move, the Pelicans acquired DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins, the best center in basketball Sunday night after the game. Boogie’s former team, the Sacramento Kings, made the trade in part because they didn’t want to commit a whopping $219 million to Cousins in a new contract.
Major League Baseball (MLB)
MLB Spring Training began in Florida and Arizona last week, and regular season games start Sunday, April 2.
The defending champion Chicago Cubs are having fun preparing for the upcoming season. Their young stud, Kris Bryant, was seeing stars when he got pranked by former Cubs Hall of Famer Greg Maddux.
College Basketball
The college matchup of the week took place in Waco, Texas where #3 Kansas dropped #4 Baylor 67-65. Despite standing a mere 5’11”, Kansas star guard Frank Mason III is college basketball’s player of the year frontrunner.
Sticking up for your colleagues…Kentucky coach John Calipari pulled a Donald Trump and went off on the media and administrators for the unfair treatment of fellow college coaches.
No POTUS picks this year. One thing Donald Trump will not be bragging about is his NCAA tournament predictions. Unlike President Obama, who filled out his NCAA brackets every year, the current US President is keeping his college basketball thoughts to himself.
Three weeks away from the NCAA tournament and The AP top-5 teams are:
#1 Gonzaga
#2 Villanova
#3 Kansas
#4 Arizona
#5 UCLA
