As Houston and other parts of Texas fight to stay above water, we wish everyone impacted by Hurricane Harvey a safe exit and return, and a speedy recovery.
Let’s take a break to look at what’s happening in the sports world…
Boxing
The much-hyped “fight of the century” took place Saturday between the biggest draws in boxing and mixed martial artist (MMA). Now the money…

Floyd “Money” Mayweather (50-0) lived up to his nickname. The boxer won and cashed in to the tune of roughly $200 million. Don’t feel bad for the “loser”, Conor McGregor. MMA’s top attraction took home a reported $100 million.
Major League Baseball (MLB)
Home away from home? Displaced by Harvey, the Houston Astros will play their upcoming “home” series against the Texas Rangers in St. Petersburg, Florida. Yes. Florida. Houston will stay in the Sunshine State over the weekend and “host” the New York Mets.
College Football
School is back in session on college campuses, which means football is here too. Classwork, well that’s another story.
I’ll tell you if you tell me…#11 Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and #17 Florida coach Jim McElwain are playing games in the media. The two teams meet Saturday but neither coach will reveal his starting quarterback.

We may not know who will be on the field for Michigan Saturday but we know what they’ll be wearing. The Wolverines will don all maize uniforms for just the second time in their history in celebration of the school’s bicentennial and 150 years of its colors.
The top matchup of the week, and maybe the season, is #3 Florida State taking on #1 Alabama in Atlanta. Both teams have hopes of ending up in the college football Final Four in January.
National Football League (NFL)
Ouch! It’s only the preseason but the pain continues for NFL fans as key players keep going down with injuries. Call 1-800-Flowers for this week’s seriously injured players:
WR Julian Edelman, New England Patriots

RB Spencer Ware, Kansas City Chiefs
WR Cameron Meredith, Chicago Bears
Harvey flexed its muscle on the NFL, too. The Houston Texans are moving Thursday’s preseason game versus the Dallas Cowboys 240 miles north up I-45 to Dallas.
Reminder: The NFL season kicks-off Thursday September 7th with one game, and a full slate of Week 1 matchups Sunday, September 10th.
Tennis
The US Open started yesterday with a bang.

Bad draw…#2 Simona Halep was hoping to get a few easy matches to start the tournament. No such lick as she drew former champ Maria Sharapova instead. Sharapova, playing in her first Major tournament since returning from a 15-month drug suspension, beat Halep 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
