Greatness in Sight

While some sports (football, hockey and basketball) are in the midst of their summer slowdown, greatness is nonetheless in the air.

Golf

Jordan Spieth is young but has a tremendous future. Not yet 24, Spieth won the Open Championship (fka The British Open) Sunday. With the victory, Spieth became just the eight golfer in history to win three Majors and only the second to do it before age 24.

Spieth must have been inspired on a trip to Cabo, where he posed with all-time sports greats, Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps as well as NFL champion Russell Wilson.

Comparisons to the “other” Jordan, considered the best basketball player ever, are premature but keep in mind that MJ won the first of his six NBA championships when he was 28 and finishing his seventh season.

Next up, the PGA Championship (Aug. 10-13 in Charlotte, North Carolina), where Spieth will attempt to complete the Major Grand Slam (winning all four Majors in a career).

National Basketball Association (NBA)

The closest thing to MJ’s greatness these days is LeBron James, a three-time NBA champion and four-time MVP. James’ Cleveland Cavaliers teammate, Kyrie Irving, an all-star and NBA champion himself, is ready to part ways with King James and the dysfunctional Cavs.

Why would you leave a team that went the three straight finals and won a championship? Good question. Irving fears LeBron might bolt from Cleveland next summer leaving behind an average team with bad contracts.

Look for the drama in Cleveland to continue.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

The best team in the American League continues to be the Houston Astros who are running away with the AL’s best record.

Don’t be fooled by the small package. Standing just 5’’6”, Astros star second baseman Jose Altuve is not physically intimidating but his numbers sure are. Altuve leads the MLB in hitting and is the game’s most valuable player (based on WAR – wins above replacement).

The Washington Nationals own the National League’s second-best mark and are led by MVP frontrunner Bryce Harper. The 24-year-old superstar is the only player in the top-five in the major offensive categories (average, home runs, runs batted in).
