Where did everyone go? While you’ve been engrossed in Netflix’s latest must-see show 13 Reasons Why the sports fans in your life have been binge watching too.

College basketball’s Men’s and Women’s titles were determined in dramatic fashion over the weekend. Baseball season kicked off on Sunday, and fans are gearing up for professional hockey and basketball playoffs to start next week.

College Basketball

After months of playing basketball (and a lot of missed classes) the college basketball titles were handed out over the weekend.

Men

#1 seeds Gonzaga and North Carolina both won close Semifinal games on Saturday and met in the Finals Monday. The UNC redemption tour ended with a 71-65 victory, avenging last year’s championship game loss and bringing a sixth title to Chapel Hill. North Carolina was led by senior Joel Berry II who scored 22 points despite playing on two bad ankles.

Women

UConn, the Goliath of college sports, was slayed by Mississippi State Friday night in the national semifinals. UConn had won 111 straight games (dating back to November 2014) and was everyone’s pick to capture their fifth straight title. Then Cinderella showed up.

The clock abruptly turned to midnight, however, when MSU met South Carolina for the third time this season in the Finals. South Carolina won again and captured their first national title fulfilling a lifelong dream for coach Dawn Staley who went to three Final Fours as a player but never won a championship.

Getting your groove back…With the playoffs two weeks away the Golden Sate Warriors are in business again, having won 11 games in a row. The Warriors stumbled after losing star forward Kevin Durant a month ago. KD is expected back as early as Saturday to the dismay of the rest of the league.

Surprise surprise…The Boston Celtics are one of the NBA’s biggest surprises. After winning eight of their last 10 games, the Celtics overtook the Eastern Conference lead from overwhelming favorites, the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celts and Cavs Wednesday with the #1 seed and home court advantage up for grabs.

With 40 triple-doubles (double digits in points, assists and rebounds) already, MVP frontrunner Russell Westbrook has six games left to break Oscar Robertson’s record of 41. What’s the big deal? Averaging a triple-double has only been done once in the 70-year history of the NBA. #AmazingFeat

Going back to school…NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing is returning to coach his Alma Mater, Georgetown. He might want to ask fellow NBA legend, former college rival and current St. Johns coach Chris Mullin how hard it is to turn around a previously elite program.

This is how we remember Ewing as a champion at Georgetown:

National Hockey League (NHL)

The weather is heating up and so is the NHL action. The final week of the regular season is here and teams are scrambling for playoff position while trying to keep their players healthy.

The Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets sit atop the Eastern Conference while the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild lead the West.

The playoffs start Wednesday, April 12th.

Make sure you tune into the NHL playoffs because the league decided to skip the 2018 Seoul Olympics. The players are livid.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Take me out to the Ball game…Another baseball season kicked off Sunday night. The defending champion Chicago Cubs lost a close game to the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals

Hoping for some championship vibes, the Boston Red Sox had defending NFL champion New England Patriots QB Tom Brady throw out the first pitch at their home opener. Brady’s jersey, which was stolen after the Super Bowl and then recovered in Mexico, was lifted again, this time by teammate Rob Gronkowski. Oh and the Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3.

Pace yourself with the peanuts and Cracker Jacks as there are 161 regular season games remaining over the next six months.
