Champions Again

Wonder Woman is the back-to-back champ at the box office this week, and in music, “Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankees featuring Justin Bieber held on to the top spot for the fifth week in a row.

We’ll have to wait until next year to see if Dear Evan Hansen can repeat its impressive six Tony award performance.

The sports world was also full of championship glory this week. In basketball, hockey and tennis familiar faces returned to the top of the mountain.

National Basketball Association (NBA)

After a third straight Finals appearance (going 16-1 in the playoffs), with two championships, there is no doubt that the Golden State Warriors are NBA’s best team. LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers were the defending champs and put up an historic offensive performance in game four Saturday to avoid being swept. Ultimately the Warriors, the 2015 champs, were just too good and closed out the series Monday night.

Hitting the jackpot…The Warriors added former MVP Kevin Durant in the offseason and did he ever pay off. Durant took over the Finals leading all scorers with 35 points per game en route to earning Finals MVP honors.

Gotta be the shoes…As good as Durant and LeBron are, Michael Jordan is still the greatest of all time. If you needed a reminder of his icon status, a pair of his game-used shoes sold for a record $190,000. Take a trip down memory lane with Spike Lee, Jordan and the shoes

National Hockey League (NHL)

The defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins had to sweat but ultimately were too much to handle for the Nashville Predators. Playing in the franchise’s first Finals, the Predators tied the series 2-2 and Music City was rocking. The Penguins, however, proceeded to flex their championship muscle and defeated the Predators 6-0 in game five and 2-0 in the series-clinching game six Sunday.

#IronCity #BackToBack…This title makes five for the Pens franchise and three for Finals MVP Sidney Crosby, still considered by many the best player in hockey. Teammate and goalie Matt Murray has two championships in his first two seasons. Not a bad start to his career.

Tennis

Felicidades Rafael el Gran! Congrats Rafael the Great! Tennis’ clay court master did it again. Spaniard Rafael Nadal won his record 10th French Open title Sunday after dominating Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in the finals. Nadal now trails only Roger Federer (18 titles) with 15 Grand Slam victories.

The one that got away. #3 ranked Romanian Simona Halep was up one set and 3-0 in the second but lost to Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the Women’s finals. With a victory Halep would have won her first Grand Slam title and secured the world #1 ranking. Instead, Ostapenko became the first unseeded woman since 1933 to win the French Open.

Horse Racing

No repeat champs here…There was no Triple Crown this year as three different horses won horse racing’s three major events. Saturday, Tapwrit beat favorite Irish War Cry at the Belmont Stakes in New York. Thankfully there are plenty of local watering holes for racing fans to blow off steam.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

Out of thin air…The Colorado Rockies are one of the best stories in baseball. Few expected them to be contenders this season let alone sit atop the National League standings. Colorado has historically enjoyed a hometown altitude advantage in Denver. That makes this year’s team success even more surprising. The current squad is just ok at home but one of the best road teams in baseball.

Better late than never…Washington Nationals first baseman and MVP candidate Ryan Zimmerman is having his best year ever. What’s the big deal? Only that he is doing it in his 13th professional season.
