Stephen Colbert delivered the jokes and political satire, while Big Little Lies, Handmaid’s Tale and Saturday Night Live were the winners at Sunday’s Emmy’s.

In sports this week, baseball squads celebrated making the playoffs while some top football teams got back on track.

National Football League (NFL)

The New England Patriots returned to form after a surprise Week 1 loss by crushing an overmatched New Orleans Saints team.

The Atlanta Falcons opened up their beautiful new $1.2 billon Mercedes Benz stadium with a bang. The Falcons looked like a Lamborghini while making the Green Bay Packers, look like a Chevy.

Mile High Mauling. In a highly anticipated matchup, the Denver Broncos crushed the Dallas Cowboys in the Mile High city, 42-17. The contest featured a rare one-hour lightning delay in the first quarter. Maybe the refs forgot to tell the Cowboys to come back when the skies settled.

Week 2 in the NFL ended with a dud. The New York Giants looked lost at home (which is actually in New Jersey) falling 24-10 to the suddenly impressive Detroit Lions.

College Football

To quote the famous baseball player and part-time philosopher, Yogi Berra, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” After an impressive win against #14 Louisville, defending champion Clemson is ranked #2 and is creeping up on #1 Alabama.

Recall that these have been the two best programs the past few years, splitting the last couple National Championships.

Third time’s a charm? Don’t be surprised if these two meet again in January for all the marbles.

Major League Baseball

Are we there yet? With two weeks left in the grueling six-month baseball season, the playoff picture is shaping up.

Popping the bubbly and clinching a playoff berth over the weekend were the Cleveland Indians, winners of an incredible 24 of their last 25 games, and Houston Astros, who won their first division title since 2001. The other American League teams looking good for the post-season are the Boston Rad Sox and New York Yankees.

In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers sill own baseball’s best record and are joined by the Washington Nationals as playoff teams. The defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs have not clinched but are likely to return to the post season.

Boxing

A tie? Really? In one of the best boxing matchups in recent memory, Gennady “GGG (Triple G)” Golovkin (37-0-1) from Kazakhstan took on Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2) of Mexico for the middleweight titles. The match was close for everyone in the arena, except for one of the three judges who may have been watching figure skating.

One judge scored the fight 115-113 for GGG, the second had a 114-114 tie. That’s pretty close…But the final judge, Adalaide Byrd, scored it 118-110 for Canelo. Critics said it was one of the worst scored fights in boxing history, and Byrd got temporarily suspended. #Recount
