Summer is over (unofficially, at least) which means temperatures are cooling, kids are in school and sports is back in business.  After taking a backseat to movies, waterparks and BBQs, US sports are back strong with the start of the college and professional football seasons.

Let’s see what’s happening in the world of sports…

TINK Sports Big-3

Here are three things you need to know:

1) The NFL season kicks off Thursday

2) College football opened its 2018 campaign over the weekend

3) The US Open is heading into the home stretch with some familiar names sent packing

National Football League (NFL)

After a summer hiatus and millions of fantasy drafts over the last few weeks, the king of all US leagues, the NFL, is back.  The season starts Thursday with a matchup of the Atlanta Falcons visiting the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles.  The Eagles are looking to pull off a repeat, something that hasn’t been done in nearly 15 years.

The rest of the teams play their first game Sunday or Monday night.

Oak-Town or Chi-Town?  One of the game’s biggest stars, Khalil Mack, was traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Chicago Bears just days before the regular season begins.  Don’t feel bad for the former defensive player of the year, however, as the Bears showered him with love and a record six-year, $141 million dollar contract. #BearHug

Swoosh…Colin Kaepernick was chosen by Nike to mark the 30th anniversary of its iconic “Just Do It” campaign.

College Football

The coeds returned to campus and college football burst back into the spotlight over the weekend.

Hangover?  Maybe for college kids partying too much over the Labor Day weekend but not for defending champion Alabama who crushed Louisville 51-14 Saturday.  #2 Clemson, #3 Georgia and #5 Ohio State also had easy wins Saturday.

Speaking of Ohio State, they were a mess over the summer as an assistant coach had domestic violence charges brought against him, which the coaching staff suppressed.  Head coach Urban Meyer was suspended for the season’s first three games.

In a game of big time tradition, #14 Michigan continues to struggle on offense and lost to #12 Notre Dame in a south bend “green-out.”

Tennis

In a Labor Day tradition, the US Open is the talk of the town in New York.  The tournament had shockers on each side of the draw already.  #1 seeded woman Simona Halep lost in the first round while the #2 seeded man, and greatest of all time, Roger Federer, lost in the round of 16.

Federer’s rivals, and living legends in their own right, #1 Rafael Nadal and #6 Novak Djokovic are on a collision course to meet in the Men’s finals Sunday.

Made in the USA… Women’s GOAT #17 Serena Williams and #3 Sloane Stephens may have a date in the semifinals Thursday.

 Major League Baseball (MLB)

As the calendar turns to September, the Boys of Summer now have to share the spotlight with football but with the playoff stretch upon us, baseball is compelling.

The run-away best team in the league is the Boston Red Sox who will end having one of the most successful regular seasons ever.  The New York Yankees and Oakland A’s look to be fighting for the wildcard playoff spot and misfortune to play the Red Sox in the American League playoffs.

In the National League, the major intrigue is in the NL West where the Colorado Rockies, LA Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks are all within two games of each other for the division title.

Look for an exciting month, and distracted baseball fans, as MLB playoff races heat up.
