While La La Land cashed in on all seven of its Golden Globe nominations, Jimmy Fallon overcame technical issues, and Meryl Streep came out swinging in front of the show’s 20 million viewers.
In the sports world, college football’s team of the year award goes to Clemson while the NFL is in the process of crowning it’s champion at Super Bowl 51 on February 5th.
National Football League (NFL)
The NFL playoffs began over the weekend with a lot of anticipation but delivered performances closer to Zooolander 2 than La La Land.
In frigid 12-degree weather, the Green Bay Packers melted the New York Giants 38-13. Former league MVP Aaron Rodgers threw for four touchdowns, three of them to wide receiver Randall Cobb.
Before freezing their butts off in Green Bay Sunday, Giants receivers flew to Miami (and posed for the camera) on their day off earlier in the week. The talented bunch received plenty of heat from Giants fans after the loss

The Seattle Seahawks dropped the Detroit Lions with ease 26-6. The Lions can take solace in the fact that the Seahawks have been the class of the NFC recently having gone all the way to two of the last three Super Bowls.
Winning cures everything? In a move president-elect Donald Trump would surely be proud of, Seahawks CB Richard Sherman, feeling mistreated by reporters, embarked on a media boycott letting sports writers know “If I have something to say then I will say it myself (on social media).” No need to worry media outlets, Sherman once again addressed reporters after the Seahawks’ victory on Saturday.
The Houston Texans beat the outmatched Oakland Raiders 27-14. In a reminder that football is a contact sport, the Raiders were played with their third-string QB Connor Cook after the first two went down with injuries.
The Pittsburgh Steelers outclassed the Miami Dolphins 30-12 avenging a midseason loss. Le’Veon Bell set a Steelers franchise record with 167 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
This week’s NFL playoff schedule:

After 38 years on the job, ESPN’s Chris Berman is stepping down as the network’s top football personality. He’s a sports icon and was the face of the network for years. He coined the phrase “He Could Go All The Way” and had no shortage of player nicknames across all sports, including Andre “Bad Moon” Rison, Sammy “Say it Ain’t” Sosa, Tim “Purple” Raines, Mike “Lego” Gallego and George “Taco” Bell.

Revenge, one year in the making. #2 Clemson scored with one second remaining to defeat #1 Alabama 35-31 and capture the College Football National Championship Monday night. Clemson overcame a 14-0 deficit and was led by junior QB Deshaun Watson who tallied 420 passing yards and four total touchdowns. The back-and-forth game was a rematch of last season’s championship but with a different outcome.
The victory was extra sweet for Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney who played and coached at Alabama. After 35 years, the national title is coming back to Clemson, South Carolina. #GoTigers

Get your freak on…Milwaukee Bucks 22-year-old stud Giannis Antetokounmpo is second in All-Star forward voting behind only four-time MVP LeBron James. The “Greek Freak,” as he is affectionately called, had some fun with his newfound popularity, saying “If they could spell my name, I would have a million votes.”

At 6’11” Giannis has an enormous wingspan, and is so versatile he is playing point guard against guys eight or nine inches shorter. ESPN movie in the making? Antetokounmpo was born in Greece to Nigerian parents, but until the age of 18 had no papers, neither from Nigeria, nor from Greece.
Fresh off his Golden Globes spinning, Questlove and Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Kyrie Irving are jamming in a new short film called “Improv.”
National Hockey League (NHL)
The Columbus Blue Jackets had a 16-game winning streak (one short of the NHL record) broken last week but still sport the NHL’s best record.
Youth is served. Canadian Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid, the #1 overall pick last year, leads the NHL in scoring. American-born Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres, the #2 pick behind McDavid, missed several games this season to injury but looks to be all that as well.
College Basketball
Party on in Waco…For the first time in Baylor men’s basketball history, the team is ranked #1 after former top-ranked Villanova lost last week. Unexpected? You bet. The Bears didn’t get a single Top-25 vote in the AP preseason poll.
This week’s AP top-5 teams are:
#1 Baylor
#2 Kansas
#3 Villanova
#4 UCLA
#5 Gonzaga
