Fashion And Fame

By September 20, 2016College Football, Emmys, MLB, NFL

Last week the sports world shared the spotlight with the stars of fashion and TV.

Jimmy Kimmel made us laugh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus made us cry, Kanye made us wait and Tom Brady made us nostalgic. The 68th Emmy Awards brought us a range of emotions while NYC Fashion Week brought it’s usual glam.

With laughter, loss and patience as the name of the game, we bring you this week’s newsletter with a splash of fashion and fame.

National Football League (NFL)

Thursday kicked off NFL Week 2 with the New York Jets dropping the Buffalo Bills 37-31. Pink slip…frustrated with their performance thus far, the Bills fired Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman after the game.

What do Marc Jacobs and the NFL have in common? A rainbow of color. Jacobs displayed his colors at Fashion Week while the NFL broke out its best and brightest color rush uniforms Thursday. Hold up, what about the colorblind? Taking one for the team, the Jets wore all white instead of their typical green to help fans who had trouble during last year’s Christmas color matchup (red vs. green) between the two teams.

Getting defensive…the reigning Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos had Peyton Manning retire on them in the offseason but the defense stayed in tact. Their vaunted D scored twice in the fourth quarter Sunday leading the Broncos to a 34-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was singing in the rain as his three touchdowns led the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Cincinnati Bengals, two of the league’s best teams, in a downpour.

Home Sweet Home…The Minnesota Vikings and newly acquired quarterback Sam Bradford opened up their new $1.1 billion stadium with a 17-14 victory over the bitter rival Green Bay Packers despite losing their best player, running back Adrian Peterson, to injury.

College Football

For couch potatoes there were plenty of entertaining college football games to watch on Saturday.

Top matchups:

  • Roller coaster ride…After being down by 21 points and then up by 18, the #1 ranked and defending national champions Alabama held off a late push by #19 Ole Miss to win 48-43.
  • A star is born…#10 Louisville’s Lamar Jackson has taken the lead in the Heisman Trophy race after scoring five touchdowns in a blowout victory over #2 Florida State 63-20. (FSU’s worst loss since 1981). Jackson now has 18 touchdowns through three games, the most in major college football in 20 years.
  • #3 Ohio State, the youngest team in college football, traveled to #14 Oklahoma and dominated OU 45-24, virtually eliminating OU’s shot at the national championship.
  • Luck of the Irish was not to be found for #18 Notre Dame in a loss to #12 Michigan State. In a battle of alums, MSU’s Magic Johnson earned the right to smash a pie in ESPN’s and Notre Dame’s Mike Golic’s face.

You are not invited back to dinner! North Dakota State (an FCS team, think college football’s minor league) went on the road and shocked #13 Iowa 23-21 with a game winning field goal as time expired. To make matters worse, Iowa paid NDSU $500,000 to play the game in Iowa City.

How is Tom Brady spending his “days off?” Thanks to a four-game NFL suspension, Brady, the University of Michigan’s most famous football alum, had time to visit the Big House for the first time since he was a player in 1999 and serve as the honorary captain. Michigan started slowly but ultimately took care of Colorado 45-28. Brady returned to Gisele and his New England Patriots team with a smile on his face.

Major League Baseball (MLB)

After nearly six months and 150 games the MLB playoffs races are finally clearing up.

It was a wicked good weekend for the Boston Red Sox winning four in a row over the hated New York Yankees. The Sox killed two birds with one stone as they pulled away in the American League East and virtually eliminated the Yankees from the playoffs.

Too close for comfort…In the National League the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants are currently in as the Wildcard teams with the St. Louis Cardinals knocking on the door. All three teams are separated by just one game.

To the victor go the spoils…The Chicago Cubs have the best record in baseball and have secured a playoff berth giving them two weeks to enjoy deep dish pizza and Vienna Beef hotdogs before the playoffs begin. (The Cubs shouldn’t get too complacent as they haven’t won the World Series since 1908).
